Chapter Text
A royal-that's what Medkit always was, a king in the making, a ruler for his village, a perfect image of a noble.
Yet, his eyes lingering on the commoners with a glint of sadness in his eyes said otherwise.
It killed him, wanting nothing more than to run away and never be spoken to; never in tight suits or bickering politics, never having to stay awake for hours on end and half-consciously listening to some businessman ramble about something useless in his eyes.
Which is the predicament for the young noble right now.
How long had it been? It was definitely past his usual bedtime, not that he ever followed it closely, having too many duties as an upcoming king.
Even so, Medkit wanted nothing more than to be snuggled up in his silk blankets imported from foreign lands, not trapped in a stuffy suit trying to keep his sleepy head afloat; the alcohol definitely didn't help much either.
Setting down the glass with a gentle sigh, Medkit's gaze drifted to the noble speaking, another client of his father, the jewels lining up his outfit, making the demon's eyes hurt from how blinding they seemed.
Goodness, he was already starting to form a headache.
Yet, throughout his fuzzy mind, the prince caught sight of a hand twitching in the corner of his gaze.
Hyperlaser, one of the royals' most feared knights, strongest and head-on in battle.
As of recently, for some reason, his parents had advised the knight to guard Medkit, saying how it was time he had his own protector and how Hyperlaser was the best out there.
The teal demon remembers how he tilted his head at the male when introduced, noting his glassy helmet compared to the other metal ones. Wouldn't that be more of a disadvantage in battle?
Nonetheless, Medkit, begrudgingly, agreed, knowing that he had no say in the matter of protesting against having a guard.
Besides, Medkit definitely could've gotten someone worse. Sure, he was overbearing as expected, but he was more lenient than any of the other workers, even his parents.
It was... nice talking to him, not so much as a friend but... a nice little companion.
Medkit snapped out of his thoughts as the prince noticed the faintest tilt of Hyperlaser's helmet, the act being impossible to catch by others, but not him.
Medkit could just feel their eyes locking... what eyes did the guard have? Maybe blue or a dark color like his own... perhaps he had a few scars or so.
...
Medkit didn't know if the blush of his was from the wine or something deeper, something his present self would usually mull over, but he was way too drunk to think of the matter.
Too drunk to notice how he slouched as he cupped his cheek onto his hand, lifting up his face.
"Medkit." A voice called, instantly making the demon snap back into position as he faced the noise. His mother.
"Uhm... yes..?" The prince stuttered, his parental figure tilting her head at him before smiling.
"It's way too late for you; you have so much to study for tomorrow." The queen stated before turning her attention towards the knight. "Hyperlaser, help him off to bed, won't you?"
The demon stared at her before silently nodding, waiting as the young noble lifted himself from his seat before accompanying him out the doors.
Medkit let out a heavy sigh as the scent of candle wax and herbs filled his lungs, finally away from something that didn't reek of wine.
"Come along, young master." Hyperlaser spoke in his usual collected voice, nodding at Medkit before turning on his heel, offering to walk with him.
Yet Medkit didn't dare make a move, standing like a statue as he blankly stared at Hyperlaser before suddenly turning on his own heel and walking the other way.
"... what are you doing?" Hyperlaser called, confusion lacing his tone and body language. "I'm heading out to the garden; follow me or not." The demon responded.
In return, it was Hyperlaser turn to stand dumbly before sighing underneath his breath.
'Stubborn little thing.' Hyperlaser noted before trailing behind the noble.
Medkit's feet ached as he sluggishly stepped down the stairs, trying to not seem childish in the guards' eyes as he slowly ushered himself down.
Thankfully, for the prince trying not to wobble like a drunken sailor, Medkit's nose was infected with the scent of floral, his shoulders slumping as his arms lay numbly at his sides.
And, of course, his knight Hyperlaser had a close eye on him, folding his arms behind his back as he watched the young noble begin to slip off his shoes before trotting around the garden.
Hyperlaser let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding, glancing around the room for any danger before following loosely behind.
That's how the knight always remarked himself, always watching out for harm or suspicious figures. Some people call that an advantage, but soon you start to fear the edge you've always been hanging on, expecting to finally fall one day.
Hyperlaser was caught out of his thoughts as he felt a halt in the stag's strides, coming across a concrete flowerpot before turning to sit on the flat slab.
It was indecent for a prince to do something so 'bold' like this, but who was there to judge? Hyperlaser? Absolutely not.
In fact, Hyperlaser soon followed the demon's actions after he patted the empty space next to him. Always asking for permission, wasn't he?
The two fell into a deep silence as Medkit felt the stench of wine in his lungs be replaced with the gentle floral, relaxing further as his shoes dangled in his hands.
"You should really be off to bed." Hyperlaser broke through, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Oh please, I should have been in bed ages ago; a few more minutes up won't do any less harm." Medkit waved off, placing his shoes to the side of him. "Besides, it's not like you have anywhere to be; it's in your job to protect me."
That caused the guard to let a huff escape, more lighthearted than he wanted it to be. "Fair point, it's not like I get any rest in this place... but you should still listen to your mother." Hyperlaser responded, causing Medkit's expression to sour.
An insult hung on the prince's tongue, wanting to call his statement 'rubbish' and brush off his worries, but the mention of his mother... it brought up a worry for him he'll have to encounter some day in the future.
Nonetheless, he couldn't find himself to bluntly say it, so he'd have to try something else. "How can you stay so calm in battle? Or do you secretly scream like a girl from underneath that helmet." Medkit questioned, a smirk tracing his lips as Hyperlaser scoffed.
"Please... and.. it comes with time; you get used to it." That caused Medkit to frown once more. "... you shouldn't have to get used to that.. regardless of your status." Medkit argued as the guard just shrugged, a bit tense in the gesture.
The prince's fingers found themselves intertwining and fiddling with each other, his gaze glancing anxiously from the ground to the figure next to him.
".. may I... tell you a secret?" Medkit asked, letting his gaze fully fall onto his hands as the warrior tilted his head at him. "Of course.. it's my job to... but.. I'll listen, nonetheless." Hyperlaser nodded, trying to ease Medkit and make him feel like he wasn't just doing this because he was his bodyguard.
"I... I just.." Medkit sputtered, feeling sweat begin to drip down his cheek.
"Don't worry.." a velvety voice suddenly called, taking note of Hyperlaser inching closer. "Take your time... I promise, I won't judge; that's the last thing I'd do." The knight comforted, causing that familiar blush to rise up Medkit's neck.
Taking in a deep breath, the demon finally started. "I.. I am not afraid to become king, for that has been my job since I was made... but.. I am fearful of my studies suddenly being focused on women."
That made Hyperlaser perk up.
"I.. I wouldn't mind having a wife or children; that thought sounds nice... but I am so afraid of it turning to dust... just another loveless marriage like my parents." Medkit confessed, his hands slowly peeling apart in a gesture.
"I mean.. all of this would be for nothing! A wife known for nothing else but housing, and I will become a tyrant to my own family... I care for my village like they are my family.. I cannot make my child born out of everything but love." The prince let out a deep sigh after his ramble, casting his stare onto his naked feet, the dirt piling underneath the skin.
The latter was speechless; who wouldn't be? I mean, royals aren't known much for their humility, so this was way out of the ordinary.
Regardless, it was Hyperlaser's job to offer solace for the young prince in any way.
"Well," the demon started, bringing Medkit's gaze to his finger pointed towards the sudden flower blooming in the ground compared to all the organized flowers. "The fact that you care so much about, not just your family, but your city... it shows how well you will become of a king." Hyperlaser turned his head.
"Maybe this act will do you some good. Maybe you won't be like all your loveless ancestors... you will do good as a father some day." The knight answered, causing a rare smile from the noble in reaction.
It was a shame he had such a pretty smile yet such a cold job for a future king...
"Or maybe get a husband." Hyperlaser joked, only realizing how rude the comment sounded. Nonetheless, Medkit did not take offense, a small chuckle escaping him, perhaps the alcohol taking over a bit too much.
"Mh.. be my knight and protect me when that time comes, being surrounded by lustful women." Medkit teased in response, leaning his head onto Hyperlaser's shoulder as he wrapped his arm around the arm that covered his hands.
The demon felt still, even as he gave the other a silent nod.
"... you should really head off to bed, young master." Hyperlaser coughed, causing a hum from Medkit as he slipped away.
"Fair... carry me." Medkit demanded, causing Hyperlaser's own covered chuckle to escape. "Sure, sure." Leaning over to hoist the stag into a bridal position, grasping his shoes for him before exiting the garden.
"... you're blushing."
"It's because of the wine." Medkit grunted, maneuvering his face away as the demon laughed once more.
"Oh, don't tell me you're a lightweight like your parents." Hyperlaser shook his head as he helped Medkit out of his arms, opening his room door for him.
Medkit sighed as he was met with his familiar room as Hyperlaser glanced around the room; plants and books lined up across the walls and shelves with trinkets designing any empty space.
"Are you going to watch me strip?" Medkit called, a smirk lining his face, blush decorating underneath Hyperlaser's helmet even with the joking tone.
".. well, I do have to guard you." The demon replied, bringing his back up against the door, even if no one was awake.
Meanwhile, the stag stared at the knight before his smirk traced back, fixing off his accessories and gingerly placing down the jewelry before unbuttoning his suit vest.
It was no doubt why Medkit was a royal; he was beautiful everywhere, from his figure to the freckles dipped in his face as his hair hung the curve of his head.
"Medkit," Hyperlaser called, catching the stag's attention at his name rather than status, tilting his head up towards the guard as he folded his shirt aside, his torso bare in front of his own guard.
".. this is wrong.." Hyperlaser sputtered, Medkit's smirk returning as he stared at the demon before walking over to his large bed. ".. go get me a tea; I need something to wash down this wine... you know how I like mine?" Medkit asked.
".. of couse." And with that, Hyperlaser turned on his heel to walk out, slumping against the door once he was out.
... fuck.
...
It didn't take long before Hyperlaser returned with the brewing cup of tea, knocking on the wood before entering once the prince called him in, relaxing slightly at him being changed into silk robes rather than... nude.
"Here... be careful." Hyperlaser whispered, handing over the cup as Medkit gently took the drink, blowing softly at the hot liquid.
The two sat in silence, just offering their presence for one another.
Hyper wasn't looking out for the danger as usual.
Medkit was free from his fear of his future.
Even if it was for a moment.
".. I really must return back to work." The knight spoke up, interrupting the silence as Medkit shook his head despite his smile.
".. you really should get some rest once in a while." Hyperlaser shrugged at that, "there's no rest in phight."
"Still.... don't dawn that helmet for so long." The prince hummed, making eye contact with the demon.
"... alright, alright... I'll let you run off to your duties.." The stag shook his head, lifting the tea down into his lap as Hyperlaser nodded at him being excused.
Footsteps against the wood echoed through the room as he folded his arms behind his back. "... rest well, Medkit."
"Goodnight, Hyperlaser..."
...
Instead of the scent of wine lingering, it was the familiar woody scent of Hyperlaser's aroma.
Bringing his lips up, he sipped gently from the warm tea.
He'd have to gather that plant for his own care, just in case someone would think it's a weed. It was quite a beauty.
