Summary:

A school or a battlefield?

Chapter Text

The morning after Yumeko’s debut, St. Dominic’s felt… unsettled. Not chaotic — not yet — but disturbed, like someone had shifted gravity by a degree.

Students buzzed in hallways, whispering her name. The new gambler. The girl who rolled double sixes in front of Council members. The one who looked Kira Timurov in the eye like they were equals.

That hadn’t happened in years.

Not one student dared stand eye to eye with the president. Not one dared challenge the system so casually.

Yumeko did — without blinking.

As she walked into school that morning, eyes followed her like she was a loaded gun. She felt the air change, taking note of passing glances, calculating who feared her, who hated her, and who—perhaps dangerously—admired her.

She passed Ryan. He hesitated before walking beside her.

“You planned that,” he muttered softly.

She didn’t turn. “Which part?”

“The dice roll.”

“Perhaps,” she replied, smiling faintly. “Or perhaps I simply acted at the precise moment probability aligned.”

“That sounds… insane.”

“That sounds,” Yumeko said, stopping to face him, eyes intense, “like control.”

Ryan swallowed. There was no arrogance in her. Just certainty.

---

Michael watched them from a nearby hallway corner, his grip tightening on his tablet. He wasn’t the type to stalk, but Yumeko’s every move felt significant — like if he missed a single second, he’d lose understanding of the unfolding strategy.

She was too confident.

Confidence was never free.

His father once told him: “The most dangerous players are those who enter the game willing to lose everything. Because they already lost something priceless before.”

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

Yumeko wasn’t playing to win. She was playing to destroy.

---

The Student Council gathered in their private chamber — walls lined with security monitors, game history records, and personal student dossiers.

Kira entered last.

The room stiffened.

“Updates,” she demanded.

Runa spoke first. “She’s watched. Extensively. All feeds show consistent confidence.”

“Meaning?”

“She hasn’t flinched once,” Runa admitted. “Even alone. No signs of fear.”

Chad smirked, legs kicked up on the table. “Maybe she’s just stupid.”

None of them laughed.

Michael’s voice came through the surveillance audio feed — recorded from the previous evening in the study lounge:

"She didn’t hesitate. Not once. People like that don’t rely on luck. They rely on inevitability."

Dori leaned in, twitchy. “I like her,” she whispered. “Can I break her?”

“No,” Kira said.

Dori’s grin faded.

Kira stood at the head of the table. Composed. Controlled. Unreadable.

“If Kawamoto wants a game,” she said softly, “she won’t be given scraps.”

Silence.

“She will be given a stage.”

---

The first official notice appeared on digital screens across the school:

UNOCCLAIMED BET: Transfer Student Yumeko Kawamoto — challenged by Student Council Representative (TBA) for school initiation assessment. Wager minimum: $100,000. Acceptance required before Friday.

Time limit: 72 hours.

Students screamed internally.

No freshman ever received a Council initiation match, especially not this high. Yumeko hadn’t even ranked yet. Strongest players waited years to face the Council.

But Yumeko?

Day two.

Ryan looked at the screen in horror.

Michael smirked slightly.

“It begins,” he said aloud.

---

The entire cafeteria watched her reaction. She read the display calmly.

“For a second day match,” she murmured, “I expected higher stakes.”

Gasps.

Michael stepped toward her. “Are you sure you want this?”

She turned, eyes soft but voice firm. “Want?” She smiled. “Most definitely.”

Ryan whispered, “What happens if you accept?”

Her gaze flickered — something darker, deeper.

“Then I get closer to the one holding the answers.”

Ryan froze.

Michael understood.

Kira.

---

Yumeko walked to the public terminal and swiped her ID.

ACCEPTED: Yumeko Kawamoto.

Under ‘Opponent’, the system refreshed.

Name revealed.

KIRA TIMUROV.

The cafeteria went silent.

Someone dropped their tray.

Yumeko read it without blinking.

Her lips parted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

A smile.

“Perfect,” she whispered.

---

After school, Ryan confronted her.

“Are you insane? You can’t defeat her! She’s… she’s Kira!”

Yumeko looked at him, softening slightly. “Why? Does fear give her power?”

“Because she earned it,” Ryan said.

“Or,” Yumeko countered, “because they surrendered it.”

He didn’t know what to say.

Michael approached then, more composed. “You’ve forced her hand too early. She won’t play fairly.”

“Neither will I,” Yumeko said, eyes glinting.

Michael’s gaze sharpened. For the first time, he saw something entirely human beneath her strategy.

She was hurting.

“You’re coming after them because of your parents,” he said quietly. “The ‘kakegurui’… the same ones her family is tied to.”

Yumeko’s eyes flickered, not with fear, but with icy resolve.

“Yes.”

Ryan looked between them. “What are you talking—”

“Nothing,” they both said at once.

---

Three days passed in tense silence.

School halls felt like a drawn bowstring.

On the third day, Yumeko received a message under her dorm door.

A simple card.

Tomorrow. 7 PM. Council Game Hall.
Stake: Truth.
Format: Determined on arrival.

— K

Yumeko closed her fingers around the card. Her lips curved. Her pulse didn’t race.

It steadied.

---

Council Room – That Same Night

Kira sat alone in the darkness, staring at the surveillance of Yumeko sitting silently in her room. Calm. Composed. Calculated. Perfectly still.

Riri stood nearby.

“You’re intrigued,” she said softly.

Kira didn’t deny it.

“She doesn’t fear you.”

“I’ve noticed.”

“…Do you fear her?”

Kira tilted her head.

“Not yet.”

Riri murmured faintly. “You will.”

---

Yumeko’s Dorm – Midnight

She stared at a photo of her parents.

“I’m close,” she whispered.

“But to ruin them, I must get close enough to destroy her first.”

She closed her eyes.

“I will defeat her…”

“…even if I must love the risk she becomes.”

---

Night fell.

The Council Game Hall wasn’t just a room. It was ceremonial.

Circular. High ceilings. Walls lined with historical bet ledgers. Spotlights focused on a centre table — single lamp overhead.

Yumeko arrived exactly on time.

She wore her uniform buttoned all the way to the collar. Hair left down. Calm.

Students crowded outside — ranks from top to bottom lined up in silence.

Ryan and Michael stood closest to the door.

She passed them.

“Good luck,” Ryan whispered.

“You don’t need luck,” Michael muttered.

“I don’t,” Yumeko replied, pausing. “But she does.”

---

Kira entered from the opposite side.

Flawless.

Dark coat over uniform. Every step calculated.

She sat.

Yumeko sat.

Two queens.

One board.

Kira spoke first.

“Welcome to your assessment, Yumeko.”

“I was waiting,” Yumeko responded.

“State your stake.”

“My stake,” Yumeko said, tone softening like silk sliding across steel, “is truth.”

Kira’s brows lifted slightly.

“And yours?”

Kira hesitated only a second.

“…Control.”

A surge of murmurs.

Yumeko leaned forward, the lamp casting shadows across her eyes.

“If I win,” she said, “you answer my questions. No lies. No shielding. No omissions.”

Kira’s eyes sharpened.

“And if I win… You submit to the Council's order. No challenge. No revolt.”

She held Yumeko’s gaze.

“And you will stop trying to dismantle the system.”

Ryan’s breath caught.

Michael stiffened.

Yumeko’s smile was slow, dangerous.

“Then let us gamble the future.”

---

Kira opened a velvet case.

Cards. Coins. A deck hand-painted, antique. Every round is randomised by machine — designed to eliminate external control.

But not internal will.

“This game is called Insight,” Kira stated.

“Each round, we draw a card with a hidden question. The one who answers falsely loses a point. First to reach zero loses entirely.”

Yumeko nodded.

“Truth under pressure,” she said softly. “How... intimate.”

Kira blinked once.

The room tensed.

---

Round 1

Card drawn.

“What is your greatest fear?”

Kira answered first.

“Stagnation.”

Yumeko studied her. She believed it.

Yumeko spoke.

“Losing control of myself before the game ends.”

The students gasped.

Kira didn’t.

She felt it.

That wasn’t a weakness.

That was a confession of power.

---

Round 2

“Whom do you most wish to defeat?”

Kira: “Anyone who threatens what I built.”

Yumeko: “You.”

No hesitation.

Kira inhaled — not visibly, but deeply enough that only Michael noticed.

---

Round 3

“What do you desire?”

Kira looked at Yumeko.

Paused.

“Victory,” she said.

Yumeko slowly leaned in.

“I desire…” she whispered, “to watch you break… right before you fall.”

Kira’s pupils dilated a fraction.

She didn’t flinch.

But she felt.

---

Round 4

“What is your weakness?”

Kira: “I don’t lose.”

Yumeko smiled.

“Your weakness… is believing that.”

Silence.

Ryan nearly collapsed.

Michael’s eyes widened.

Kira’s fingers twitched.

---

A beat.

Then Kira smiled.

Slowly.

That was the first time she had smiled all year.

---

“Are you willing to risk everything?”

Yumeko didn’t wait.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No condition.

Kira stared at her.

Then — to everyone's shock —

“So am I.”

The card burned between them metaphorically.

The system registered simultaneous truth.

DRAW.

But in St. Dominic’s, a draw never ends a game.

It starts one.

---

They didn’t break each other tonight.
They recognised each other.
And therefore, the danger doubled.

The official ruling of the match:

“Unresolved: continuation required.” Next session — no limits.

Kira leaves the chamber,

“You interest me, Yumeko. Try not to crumble before we finish.”

Yumeko leaving,

“I only crumble when the game is harmless. And this one… is beautiful.”

They passed each other.

They did not touch.

But in that second, every student knew—

The school belonged to them now.

Together.

Until one destroyed the other.

Or didn’t.
