I want to be your heart

Summary:

"Thought you were getting drenched by the rain, so..."

For the first time in a while, Alphys gets faced with kindness, with an umbrella and some words.

Little did Undyne know, Alphys was already thinking of doing something... cowardly. But maybe, Undyne saved her, while not even trying.

Based off the song "I want to be your heart" by YurryCanon. Go listen to it, it's so good.

Chapter 1: Dump

Chapter Text

The rain was relentless as always. Well, it wasn't really raining - weather didn't exist in the Underground. All the droplets were just some random drops of water falling from the ceiling.

The droplets caressed Alphys’s face as she sat right at the dump - her element. The abyss stared back, its gaze penetrating through her foggy glasses. She looks… contemplative. Too contemplative, it's almost haunting.

The deep trench of the dump didn't look too frightening to Alphys's eyes. In fact, she wanted to jump there - right here, right now.
She had done nothing but bring pain to this world - she's a mess, she's unlovable, and let's not forget the things she's done to the Amalgamates…

She closed her eyes, leapt into the abyss… and suddenly, the rain stopped…?

Opening her eyes again, Alphys looked forward, questioning what the hell just happened. It was like the world suddenly went… silent. Even the roaring waters didn't dare to make a single sound.

Not long after opening her eyes, she turned back like a startled weasel, and…

A fish-like girl, covering Alphys with her umbrella. She had no need for an umbrella - since she was a fish after all, but decided to cover the two of them with her umbrella together. After all, it's better this way, don't you think?

She sat near Alphys, adjusting and shifting her position so she was at the same height as Alphys, their eyes meeting. …Why was this girl doing so much just for her?

“Hey! Thought you were getting drenched by the rain, so…” The fish girl greeted, turning her head to Alphys - giving a friendly smile, the usual grin she gives. “I haven't seen you around here. Oh, wait, I haven't introduced myself…! The name's Undyne, head of the Royal Guard. It's nice to meet you!” Wait. …The Royal Guard?!

“Ah! I-I'm Alphys, the Royal Scientist!” Alphys, getting intimidated by the cheerfulness and scariness radiating from Undyne. Way to go, Alphys… already stuttering at the first proper word. “It's nice to meet you too…!”

“Oh, you look intimidated. Fuhuhu, don't worry, I'm not that scary! I won't lay a finger on you, promise.” Undyne extended her hand out to Alphys, holding up a pinky finger. With a cowardly hesitation, the royal scientist - Alphys reached out, the both of them making a pinky promise. Ouch, Undyne's grip on her smallest finger hurted. It was… warm, though? Like a hug?

“So why are you here?” Undyne asked, breaking the silence. Shit! She'd just made a new friend - at least that's what it looks like to the very-pathetic Alphys, she can't let her know the actual reason, let alone how she runs away from every problem…

So, instead of telling her the truth, Alphys just stated, “Err... I-I was just… looking for things in the dump, that's all,” eliciting a laugh from Undyne. “Fuhuhu, we're just the same! I loooove looking for large swords in the dumps!” Alphys just laughed nervously, having conflicting feelings about the fact that Undyne's enthusiasm was making her admire her.

“...Do you live near here?” Alphys asked, hoping she at least lives somewhere in Hotland- no, that'd be unlikely. She's a fish… “Well, yeah! Why else would I go here? The trash sticks to my feet, I only come here to search for swords.”
“Cool…” Alphys muttered, the awkward silence returning.

As they locked eyes without muttering a single word, Undyne's voice broke the silence, as usual. “Hey, where do you think the abyss leads to?” she asked, making Alphys’s eyes light up. “G-good question! I have multiple theories on this…”

And Alphys kept talking, barely stumbling over her own words.

Undyne couldn't help but just admire her - and she's probably certain Alphys feels the same way. Like 2 puzzle pieces that perfectly fit, what more can she ask for?

And, to Alphys… maybe the abyss seemed a little scarier with her around.
