The Mysteries of our Town

Chapter 2: Mystery #1: the case of the creepy doll

Chapter Text

Norah was in the kitchen, adding the last fruit to a bowl she made with some stuff she found in the fridge. Ari usually didn’t mind when her friends took food from her fridge, as long as we didn't hoard it. She ate an apple slice as she sat on the couch, and ate in silence. She took the opportunity to take her alone time once Ari said it. She was gonna do it anyway, as much as she loved hanging out with her friends, although she also liked her alone time, especially after a long school week. Almost all her teachers were giving quizzes and tests the day before break.

Norah stared at the TV. When she’s done eating her fruit, she’ll go back to Ari's room to hang out with the girls.

“Wonder what they’re doing…” Norah grimaced when her eyes focused on a creepy looking bald glass doll, it had brown honey skin and a cute little red dress that little red riding hood would wear. And it happened to be dead center on the shelf under the TV. “...Yuck…” She shuddered under her breath. She was about to trade her focus to her food when the doll…fell.

“Ahh!” Norah screamed, the doll had to fall when she was the only one to witness it. “Oh shoot!” she muttered. She rushed to the floor, then crouched to pick it up, so she could inspect it to see if it had cracked. But when she picked it up. “Ughhh…” it had red eyes and a creepy smile plastered on its face, and as she took a closer look at it…it had cracked! Apparently multiple times too.

“Rahhhh…”

Norah was completely frozen and panicked when she heard that noise…it came from…The doll!

“HahahahahHAHAHAHAAH! You have reawakened me! Yesss! I am- Wait. I’m still trapped in this stupid doll! I only gained my con- Woah!” Norah threw the doll to the right. Then swiftly stood up.

“What the hell!” she rasped. She didn't want to bring any concern to Ari’s family or friends. And certainly not Ari’s grandma, as she had a heart condition, and didn't want her to have a heart attack. But her eyes widened when she saw the doll move.

“No way.” Norah said.

“Yes way!” The doll said back, it stood up and it wobbled into the guest room.

“Ugh!” Ivan stretched as he headed back in the set. “Finally did my homework! For today at least.”

“Yeah, but there’s nothing fun to do anymore! Imma hit the hay! You should…you know…” Chris giggled and wiggled in the bed. “Cuddle with me hehehe…” Ivan rolled his eyes and crossed his arms.

“As if.”

*CREAKKKKK*

“Yo what was th…” Chris butt-jumped on the bed when he saw the “Creepy looking bald glass doll!” He screeched. Making Ivan wince, Chris’s voice went extra high. Then he whined as he stood on the bed. “It's a moving creepy looking bald glass dolllll!”

“What the?” Ivan shockingly leaped out the chair and moved to the back of the room. His face flushed with concern.

Norah ran into the guest room, frantically looking for the thing. Moving her head left and right in a panicked manner. And held out her arms to try and pick it up.

“You will not capture me, child! Once I am free from this glass body, I will take my revenge on the De La Cruz Family!” The doll’s voice had an accent similar to the accent of Ari and her parents. And it was high-pitched and jokey, like an evil clown that’s a woman…or a man. Could be either honestly.

“Oh my gosh.” Chris shaked as he spoke. “It’s gonna kill Ari! And her grandma that always bakes us cookies! And her siblings we never see!”

“I don’t understand…Why would it want to kill Ari’s family?” Norah said worried and quite curious.

“I-I don’t know, But we should tell her parents about it!” Ivan suggested.

“Yeah hahaaahaha!” The doll jumped on the bed, causing Chris to fall on the floor, banging his head on the floor.

“Chris!” Norah and Ivan said in unison. They watched the doll jump up and down on Chris and stopped.

“You are not De La Cruz!” It said madly then ran to Ivan, and crawled up his back and stopped when it reached his neck, it wrapped its arms around it, Ivan shivered when he felt it sniff. “Not you either.” It claimed. The cracked its head so quick to Norah, she hardly had time to react.

Norah shook her head in a “Nuh uh!” matter. And she ran out the room. Norah ran back to the living room and was having a couch chase when she heard some ruckus in the kitchen. ‘Oh no…What if it’s Ari or her family?’ Norah thought. She knew that the doll was less likely to harm her…or Ivan, or Chris and Kiki, as they aren't part of the De La Cruz family. So the mission was…keep this doll…away from the De La Cruzes. Which was gonna be hard…as this was their home.

“Yo, Norah! There you are, I was about to-”

“Thank the freaking lord! Kiki!” Norah was relieved to know it was just Kiki in the kitchen. Norah was so distracted by Kiki that she didn’t notice the doll creeping up to her. “Oh no!” Norah ran into the kitchen and grabbed Kiki’s hand at the same time.

“Woah! Nor what are you doing?” Kiki speed walked as Norah dragged her, occasionally tripping. But then she caught a glimpse of the -”OMG say it aint so! It’s a..a creepy looking…”

“A creepy looking bald glass doll! Yeah and it's chasing us!” Norah told Kiki. “And it wants to kill Ari’s entire bloodline apparently!” She informed Kiki.

“What? You're lying!”

“No! She’s not!” Chris said. He was in a bathroom across from the kitchen, in a small corridor. “Come on!” He whispered. “Let’s trap it in here!” Norah nodded as she and Kiki dashed into the bathroom, and watched as the doll found its way in there as well.

“Everyone out the way! “ Ivan was in the back of the bathroom where the bathtub was, with his arms out and ready to capture it. Ivan ran up to the doll and grabbed it tightly. “Ahhhh! I'm holding a haunted doll!” Ivan screamed as the doll was fighting to release from his grasp.

“Holy shit!” Kiki said concerningly. She watched as the doll bit Ivan's arm, and he groaned in pain, but didn’t let go.

“Yeah! Get em! Get em!!” Kiki encouraged Ivan as she watched him stumble into the bath tub.

“Everyone! Remember we have to be quiet! I really don’t want Ari’s grandma to get startled awake.” She reminded everyone in a demanding tone, not being too loud.

“I don’t know about you but I think we should at least tell her parents!!” Chris recommended.

“Tell. Me. What?”

Everyone turned their heads.

“Ari! Run!” The four said in unison.

“From what? Why are you guys making such a ruckus?” Shouted in a mad tone, her angry eyes scanned everyone then laid on Ivan and the doll.

“Ivan!” she screamed in horror. “Mi abuela told us to never touch that doll! Or break it! What the hell are you doing? What is wrong with you!” She screeched.

“Ari! This creepy looking bald glass doll is haunted or possessed and it’s alive and evil and scary and totally here to kill your bloodline!” Kiki said, emphasizing the last word in a deep voice. “Just look!”

“You! De La Cruz! I will KILL YOU!” RAHHHH!!!” The doll’s hand. (which was just a sphere) Grew mini nails, sharp mini nails. And it began to scrape Ivan skin.

“OMG! It really does wanna kill me!” Ari paused for a moment. “Or are you all messing…” Ari thought that they were joking joking for a second, but that thought flew out the window when the doll came running to her. “Nope! Not joking!” She was about to turn and run but it grabbed her leg before she had the chance. It scraped her leg, hard.

“Ouchh! What the freak!" Ari has had just about enough of the nonsense. She picked up the doll herself and smashed it on the floor. It broke completely. “...Oh my gosh. I just broke it! Grandma’s gonna kill me!” Ari realized frighteningly. Just then, gray smoke arose from the cracks, and went into the air vent on the ceiling.

“Bruh.” Chris watched as it went into the vents, without leaving a trace.

Ari stood there for a moment, taking time to let everything sink in. She just broke the doll that her grandma told her and her siblings never to touch. But…It's not like she could do anything about it. It was trying to kill her! She had no choice. She looked worriedly at her friends, and their faces seemed pretty similar to hers, scared and confused.

“I think you guys should leave tomorrow. Before my grandma wakes up. She'll probably lecture me about this, and mi mama will differently ground me.” Ari didn’t want any of them to take the blame for anything. She knows it wasn't their fault.

“Yeah I agree.” Kiki said.
