Carter checked his watch for the 10th time in the last 5 minutes. The dock was getting empty at this point, and most of the new recruits had already boarded the ship. Carter had already gotten his assignment, and yet he was still waiting on the dock.
He should be here by now.
The pilot was starting to get odd looks from the higher ups around. Which was fair, it was his first day in the Air Force and he already wasn’t following in line. They were going to have to get used to that. But he had to see him before he boarded, at least find out what level Matt was assigned to. Once he was on board it’d be a pain in the ass to find someone in the biology unit of all places…
He couldn’t see anyone coming towards the main gate. Where was he??
“Carter!!” A voice came from the opposite direction. Matt’s voice.
Carter turned to see his boyfriend waving to him from the other side of a fence. The outer side of the fence. And he ran to meet him anyway.
“Matt! What are you doing out there? The new recruits sign in over there! The ships leaving soon, come—”
“Carter, I got it.”
“…got what?” Carter was close enough now to see the look on his face. He looked… ecstatic.
“The internship! With the Society of Biological Advances! Someone dropped out of the program and they want me to fill it! Me, haha!!”
No.
“I told you that somewhere had to accept me eventually!”
No….
“It’s the chance of a lifetime! And if I can pull it off, then—”
“Matt.” Carter cut him off, “You’re already enlisted… we said we were doing this together. You said-”
“About that…”
“Matt.”
“I might not have already enlisted…”
No.
“I was still on their waiting list and I didn’t want to give up yet- And I was right not to!! I finally get to—”
“So you’re just leaving me then.”
….
“You’re just going to let me sign my life away? Alone? You KNOW I didn’t want to do this,” Carter’s voice began to rise in volume, “This was YOUR IDEA. We go into the military, get more qualifications and experience, and THEN try your programs again!”
Matt did nothing but stare back at him.
“So now what? I’m supposed to just go and get shipped off and do this alone? While you go to your fancy program and get everything you’ve ever wanted? That’s not fair Matt. That’s not fair.”
…
“...I thought you’d be happy for me”
Dry laughter spilled out of Carter’s mouth. “Happy??” Oh you really are a genius then!!”
Matt just stared at him, confused. He really didn’t understand what this meant did he?
“Fuck you Tanek.” Carter turned his back to him and walked away.
“Wait!” Matt threw his hand up to the fence, as his joy simmered down and the reality set in, “We can still be together! We can figure something out!”
Carter didn’t look back.
“No Matt. No we can’t.”
