Chapter Text
The ceiling of Egg's room had become boring a long time ago. After tossing and turning long enough to become frustrated he made the decision to go see if Aemon happened to be awake. There was no guard at his door. He absently thought they must have been patrolling some other hallways before they would return. He hurried and left in the direction of his brother’s room. As he walked the halls he noticed footsteps from around a corner. He stopped where he stood. It could have been anyone. His father, Aerion, Aemon, a guard, a servant, or even an assassin.
The figure made it’s way into Egg’s sight. It only took a moment for Egg to comprehend who it was.
“Daeron? What are you doing?” He asked.
“Going to my room.” Daeron replied, words slurred by drunkenness. “What are you doing?”
“I was intending to see if Aemon was still awake at this hour.”
Daeron laughed. “That well mannered boy? No, he is almost certainly not.”
There was something in his brother’s tone that made Egg frown. “Is something the matter, Daeron?”
Daeron turned to Egg and knelt down to meet his eyes. “You need not concern yourself. It is only the same problem that has plagued me since I was a boy.”
Daeron’s eyes were deep red. He could smell the alcohol on Daeron’s breath now. The mixture of concern, sadness, and helplessness settled like a stone in his gut. He had no reply for his brother’s words, no balm for Daeron's aches, so he stayed silent.
“You are blessed to be human.” Daeron put a hand to Egg's cheek for just a moment before he stumbled to his feet.
