With Christmas slowly behind them, everyone's excitedly making plans for New Years. There's plenty of activities and get-togethers organized, with some groups settling for a smaller gathering and others going to full blown parties.
Gigi and Ceci chose not to go anywhere.
Even though their friends plead and insist, even though the temptations are strong. Once the eve rolled around, they were sure they wanted to just chill. To spend it together, for the first time in a while, alone.
And they decide to keep it casual.
Ceci visits Gigi, since she's got the house to herself. She brings snacks and some food from home, too much for just the two of them. But her family insisted she make sure both her and Gigi are fed well.
Gigi buys the drinks. A little sugary, but also some milder ones. She also makes sure everything is clean and prepared for Ceci’s arrival.
Which is pretty much making sure the Switch is charged.
And when Ceci arrives at her door around six in the evening, they kick off their little party. If it can be called as such.
They play games on Switch. Going from Mario Kart to Mario Party, then ditching it when they get their asses kicked by the NPC. Instead, they switch to traditional board games like Connect Four where Ceci dominates. All smug over every win while Gigi pleads for revenge.
She never gets one. At least not in Connect Four, but she only loses once to Ceci in Yahtzee. It's the lucky dice, she gloats dramatically after every win, and Ceci is only mildly annoyed.
When they're done with competitive gaming they take a break to have the dinner Ceci's family packed, and then a well deserved hour of just being lazy. Lounging on the living room floor, shifting positions when they start feeling sore. Oftentimes, their limbs end up intertwined in one way or another, like when Gigi's foot starts poking Ceci's head and she keeps having to swat it away.
They're on their phones because social media is exploding. Since it's later in the evening, everyone's posting funny pictures they show off to each other. They snap some selfies as well, goof around with the camera. Maybe even send a few to their small group chat of friends, ones they deem appropriate enough.
Kronii sends Gigi a picture of Bae asleep on Irys’s lap like a baby. It mysteriously gets wiped from their messages in minutes. Luckily, Gigi saved it in time and sent it over to Ceci, because you can never have enough embarrassing blackmail.
When they get bored of their phones, they play a few more games, like blackjack, and then get comfortable on the couch to marathon a few movies. They're purposely cringey and bad, because the only thing that beats a good movie is a bad one that gives them an excuse to talk more by making fun of it.
It's the calmest part of the night. Dark living room illuminated only by the TV and lots of Christmas lights hanging above their heads. Started out with them on opposite ends of the couch, then gradually getting closer. Until at the end of it, they're nestled together. Gigi's practically in Ceci’s lap, arms wrapped up around one another. Ceci likes running her fingers through Gigi's hair absentmindedly, taking advantage of the shorter girl having it down.
By the time they're done with movies, it's close to midnight. They waste the last 45 minutes doing blind karaoke of a couple of songs, and then they don't know what to do anymore.
They find a program on TV that does a countdown, but they're not paying it much attention. The atmosphere shifts a little in a way both notice, but don't know what to do about it. So they both just kinda sit around.
The countdown starts. And then it ends. Once it reaches zero, they just exchange quiet ‘happy new years.’
Ceci wants to move closer, but she's just as stuck awkwardly sitting as Gigi is. While the fireworks go off outside, she tries to make the move.
Only for Gigi to suddenly hop off the couch and disappear.
She shows up moments later with sparklers in her hands. Ceci has to jump off of the couch to wrangle them out of Gigi's hands after she notices she's reaching for the lighter in her pocket. Eventually convincing her they need to do it outside.
So they do. It's cold outside, freezing. Even bundled up, they both shudder in the darkness of Gigi's backyard. But the sky is clear and pretty, illuminated by the still on going fireworks. Compared to the grand show, their little sparklers are put to shame.
Yet they both watch the little sticks slowly burn down instead of the fireworks. Ceci's eyes shift between the sparks and Gigi, who's entertained by their little activity with a big smile on her face. So she smiles too, before leaning in to kiss her cheek, catching Gigi off guard.
“What was that for?” She asks dumbfounded, a slight blush exposed by the sparkler that's about to run out.
Ceci shrugs, “Just glad to start the new year with you.”
For a moment Gigi gets uncharacteristically shy. Her sparkler is out, but Ceci's still got some life to it, but not for long. So she scoots over.
By the time the sparkler dies out, Gigi leans in to kiss her. The fireworks are still going off, bound to end soon as well. Ceci reciprocates, and both of them find themselves just enjoying the moment and each other.
Once the fireworks stop, and they remember how much they're freezing, they get up and return back inside. Ready to check their phones, full of notifications, and then finally get some sleep after a nice evening together.
