The Haunt of a Lifetime

Chapter 3: Test Anxiety is a Pain. Or… Not?

Summary:

The QAT!

Oh, and the start of acknowledging canon before ripping it to shreds. That, too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Notes:

Okay, so I did turn comment moderation on because I was getting bot comments (hard pass, thank you very much). That being said, I’d love to see what you all think about this fic so far.

No pressure, obviously. Just thought I’d ask.

Now, onto the story!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The QAT is about half-way over and Morgan wants to cry. Just what were these kids told about how all their quirks worked?! The vigilantes may be young, but Bruce and Harleen helped them get their quirk analyst certifications in order to use them in Japan. And it's obvious that the Ghosts have their work cut out for themselves. David and Peter decided to head inside and get info on the new students and staff, leaving Morgan at the P.E. grounds.

Okay, quite a few of them have a solid grasp of their capabilities. That's good. Better baseline for improvement.

From what he could pay attention to, Momo, Tenya, and Katsuki used their quirks to the fullest when it came to the distance run- though Shoto's on thin ice as it is for not using his fire side. Mezo crushed the grip test, Tenya dominated the 50-meter dash, and both Mina and Toru killed it on the toe touches. Minoru passed the side-step with genius use of his quirk, and Tsuyu flew past the sandbox.

Now's the ball throw, and no one will be able to best Ochaco's score of infinity. Good for her! Katsuki, Momo and Tsu got pretty far, too.

After a few more turns, the boy narrowed his eyes, eager to see how Izuku's gonna prove himself here.

After some time thinking (and looking pained? What's up with that?), the greenet looked toward Ochaco. Clever kid. Use every resource available.

"Uraraka! Can you come help?" Her face lit up with gleeful understanding and the gravity manipulator skipped over with a smile.

Izuku handed the ball over to Ochaco, which was then made weightless. He smiled and nodded to her in thanks.

Then, with all his strength, he threw the ball. Why does he look scared?

After 5 seconds, the boy looked at his friend. Message received, she deactivated her quirk while saying "Release."

His score recorded, Shota nods. "Good thinking, Midoriya."

Izuku blushes, rubbing the back of his head. "T-thanks, Mr. Aizawa!" Then he looked up and seemed to look to the side. Something he saw made him lose color, but not so much that it's noticeable. Alarms now blaring in Morgan's head, Shota glanced at him. He noticed, too. Okay.

Walking around to get a better angle, disguising it as congratulating Izuku on his score, the Tech Ghost chanced a look at what made their fellow quirkless student react that way. And what he saw made him tense in realization. That's who Izuku's scared of! Who the hell is he?! No one on the staff has blonde hair like that… Uncle Nezu needs to know about this.

Shota, seeming to know the importance of this, decided to turn back to his waiting students. Pulling up the scores, it looked like the boy was spot on with his predictions.

Momo took 1st, Shoto was 2nd, Katsuki got 3rd, and so on.

Ah, good! Izuku’s 17th place. Not bad, honestly.

Minoru got last place, and it seemed he’s either about to start wailing or throwing a fit in anger… maybe both?

The tech Ghost looked at the underground hero with a question in his eyes. In answer, Shota subtly shook his head, which was interesting. Maybe he’s stopped his old ways?

"These are the results. You all performed the tests to the best of your abilities. However…” Shota turns his glare to the student, “Mineta Minoru, clean up your act immediately. If anyone- and I mean anyone- reports that you harass them in any way, then I will let the Ghosts deal with you.”

The boy freezes, then nods with a shaky “Yes, sir.”

Though, Morgan noticed something off with the student's eyes. Fear. Anger… Confusion?

Before he could parse through that, the students start relaxing and calming each other down from residual nerves.

Confusing Morgan even more, the hero allowed it for a few seconds.

…until he had to continue, that is. “All right, listen up. Now, your syllabi are on my desk. Head back to class and I'll join you."

"Yes, Mr. Aizawa!" The class did just that, talking all the while.

That done, Morgan and Shota turned toward each other. “I would have transferred any of them to Gen Ed if I was serious. They'd come back if they showed they were ready”

"Right." The boy scoffed, "You're telling me you wouldn't have expelled any of them?"

To their surprise, he just sighed, "…I know I wasn't a good teacher before. Believe me, Zashi, Nem and Ten yelled at me enough about it. I was… focused on survival over anything else. And that bled over to my students."

Morgan watched as the hero closed his eyes, "That's not me anymore. And I won't go back. You'll stop me if I do."

"Oh, not just me. We'll all team up against you." Despite the seriousness, they chuckle at how true that is.

But they went back to business after some time. After a glance at where Izuku looked before, Morgan saw the shady man was gone. "No one on staff looks like a twiggy scarecrow with long blond hair that frames their face in bangs, right?"

The capture scarf-wielder blinked, then tensed as the question sunk in. "No. I don't think so."

Before they could talk more, Morgan's phone startled the two.

Chat:

RatGod: Hello, Morgan! I hope you three are well and learning all about your new environment. I'd like you both to come to my office. There's quite a bit of information that I think you should know.

Viper: We are, thank you! On our way. There's something you should know as well.

Looking up, they turn to Eraserhead with venomous eyes (who seemed to notice the change) and appears to loosen a bit. "Right. Let's get some answers." And see if I need to haunt anyone threatening my students.

~~~~~~
Toshinori Yagi, otherwise known as All Might and Japan's Symbol of Peace, had hope for his new successor as he watched the assessment. Izuku Midoriya, a quirkless boy until All Might saw his heroic spirit after foolishly telling him he couldn't be a hero, trained with the man for months before receiving his quirk- but he's not using it now? Not telling anyone that he is here?
The greenet got done with his throw and looked straight at him. Young Midoriya… what am I doing wrong?
So lost in his thoughts, the man didn't notice the other boy helping Izuku out that saw him in the shadows.
Maybe if he had, so many things would have been avoided for Future All Might.
I do have pictures of what my boys look like… I just have no clue how to put them in. 🥲
If you've made it to the end, thank you for sticking with me.
