After being shot and nearly killed while on a deep cover assignment, Bryce is sent on easy assignment while he heals. He makes a name as a conman and thief while occasionally being pulled for other assignments. Being Neal Caffrey was easier than being Bryce Larkin and he finds a kind of peace in it even when he ends up in jail for a time. The FBI contracts him early because of a need to solve a case. He decides that unless it is a dire emergency, Bryce Larkin was done and he takes up the Neal Caffrey identity full time. And for a time it stays like that until Kate is murdered and an emergency draws him back into the fold. When Peter goes to get Neal out of prison, Neal isn't there.

But, when Superman reveals vampires are real and suddenly on the loose, and articles begin to sprout up about Wayne Enterprises' connection to the sudden vampire outbreaks, Bruce Wayne is put into a precarious position. And John had left the Watchtower fast enough to ensure Bruce didn't get a chance to speak with him, or give him one of those long, questioning stares. John is a lot of things, but he's no mind reader, so how is he supposed to know the Bat wants his attention?
He's on his second glass of booze — the nice kind, because he had more change in his pockets than usual and he's feeling indulgent — when the man slips into the seat next to him. Bruce is out of uniform now, dressed in a dark turtle neck sweater and a pair of worn jeans, and John doubts anyone here will recognize him.
