The rain was coming down harder than usual.
Garnet stood beneath the awning outside Forks High, watching the parking lot as it had personally wronged her. The clouds were low, heavy, predictable. Jasper stopped beside her, careful not to crowd. “You don’t mind the rain,” he said. “No,” Garnet replied. “It’s consistent.” He nodded thoughtfully. “I respect that.”
After a moment, Garnet held out her hand. “Walk me home,” she said.
Jasper froze—just long enough to be noticeable—then took her hand like it was sacred.“Yes, ma’am,” he said solemnly. Then added, dead serious, “Though I should warn you, I am prepared to fight God, gravity, or any puddle over two inches deep on your behalf.”
Garnet actually laughed.
Behind them, Edward Cullen froze mid-step. He heard it all. Every infuriatingly sincere thought Jasper had about eternity and choosing her forever. “Oh no,” he muttered.
Alice appeared at his side, grinning. “Oh yes.”
Edward turned away sharply, hands clenched, staring into the rain like it might absolve him. “I have lived through a century,” he whispered. “And this is how I suffer.”
The rain never touched them.
Edward, unfortunately, was soaked.
