Chapter Text
Listen to Stardust by the man himself
“Sure. But first let me get a drink. Want one?”
She didn’t respond. I should probably stop asking her that question, but I kept hoping one day she’d surprise me with yes. I’m a drinker, what can I say. We like having other people to drink with.
I made my way over to her at the piano. She’d picked out some sheet music and set it on the stand. She looked at me expectantly. “Can you play?” I could play, in fact. My mother gave me lessons and made me practice. Now I played on my own, for enjoyment. It was my only wholesome habit, come to think of it.
“Hoagy Carmichael. Excellent choice.” I knew Stardust by heart, even knew the lyrics. Now was my big chance to impress her. I laughed, softly, at myself. She gave me a look but didn’t say anything. Waiting.
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you.
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
Ah but that was long ago
Now my consolation is in the stardust of a song…
She stubbed out her smoke and got up. Started swaying to the music, eyes closed. Remembering, from the looks of it. Something good. Probably
from Tyrell’s niece’s past.
Beside the garden wall when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew.
When I stood up, she opened her eyes and started to speak. I gently shushed her, put her hands on my shoulders and mine at her waist. I hummed the refrain, then crooned the rest of it to her. Swaying, cheek to cheek.
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.
We stopped, breathing a little hard, again. She pulled back, but this time she closed her eyes, tilted her head, and leaned in. I met her halfway. Soft and sweet. There. She had a nice memory of her own, just for herself.
Now what. I’d let that be up to her.
