Sinking in the Ice

Chapter Text

She already remembered before they told her. She knows what happened to mom and dad. Luuk stared at her with suspicion, while Rover gently caressed her feverish forehead. Her parents were dead long before she came to the Frostlands. "She's just a child, Luuk" Rover scolded him with a whisper when they thought she was asleep. It's true, she lied. She ran away from Bjartr Woods after she became an orphan.

- Aemeath, you're from the Roya Tribe, correct? - Luuk asked, his voice calm, but stern.

- My mom was a Roya, yes.

- And you've lived in the Bjartr Woods for your whole life, correct?

- Correct.

- How old are you, Aemeath? - Rover interrupted his inquiry.

- Uhm... eight.

- Do you have any other family? Siblings, grandparents?

- No...

- You could... you could live here with us, you know. - Rover said, earning a shocked gasp from Luuk.

- Rover, she's-

- I know. - she sighed - I know you have nowhere to go, sweetheart, so if you'd want to live here... we're always open for you, okay?

Aemeath nodded and looked around. It was a nice place. The fireplace, the TV, the bookshelves, the map on the wall... it was comforting. Their presence was comforting too, especially Rover's. Indeed, she has nowhere to go and... they want her to stay. They're not like mom and dad, but... close enough. She doesn't have better ideas anyway. What was she thinking while going to the Frostlands? Definietly not expecting this. A resemblance of a family. From the surroundings, she can tell that they do not have other children. Which is a pity, because she always dreamt of having siblings to play with. Maybe this new life won't be so bad...?

- We have a storage room on the second floor, you could've have your own bedroom, hm? - Rover smiled warmly. Luuk was still hesitant, but not as worked up as earlier, more... worried. He sighed and stepped closer to the couch she was laying on.

- Candy? It'll help with your throat. - he offered quietly.

That's how she started calling him Candy Man.
