Chapter Text

They were still catching their breath.

The room smelled faintly of sweat and the lingering warmth of skin against skin. Afternoon light pressed through the curtains in a soft band across the bed, cutting over Mafuyu’s shoulder where he lay tucked against Hiiragi’s chest. They had the apartment to themselves — Mashiro was away at a Go tournament. They’d both skipped band practice, met at the station after school, and come straight back to the Satou family apartment.

Hiiragi had been insistent. Almost aggressive. He had poured every unspoken word into Mafuyu, until the only thing left was a shared, breathless ruin.

Not to hurt him. Never that.

It was something Hiiragi hadn’t quite figured out how to explain — maybe because saying it out loud would make it too real. The intensity wasn’t about urgency or frustration. It was about making something undeniable. A determination that when Mafuyu lay there afterward, loose and glowing and breathless, there would be no doubt left anywhere in his body.

That he was wanted.
That he was safe.
That he was loved.

Because that’s what this was for Hiiragi.

He loved Mafuyu Satou.

This was a truth that eclipsed ghosts: it was more than the memory of Yuki, more than the fleeting ache of Ugetsu, and it would have to be enough to stand against the bright promise of whatever Ritsuka Uenoyama offered.

The realization sat heavy and bright in his chest, almost frightening in its clarity.

Now they lay naked on Mafuyu’s narrow single bed. Mafuyu lay against Hiiragi’s chest, boneless, sated.

One truth hung over everything. Mafuyu had been his first. And he had been Mafuyu’s first. No one could ever change that.

Hiiragi felt it clearly as he eased into him that afternoon. This was more nuanced then it had been back then, more than curiosity and physical release, and it was his responsibility to make it feel good for Mafuyu. To make sure every moment counted.

Hiiragi’s arm was draped loosely over him, fingers moving in slow, absent circles along Mafuyu’s back. Not purposeful. Not leading anywhere. Just touch for the sake of touch. The skin beneath his fingers was silky, soft in a way that made his chest tighten.

He brushed Mafuyu’s hair back from his forehead, almost careful — the opposite of how he’d been minutes ago.

Mafuyu hummed under his breath — that small, content sound he made when his body hadn’t quite decided whether to sleep or stay awake.

Hiiragi smiled into his hair.

“You were intense today,” Mafuyu murmured, voice rough with exhaustion but edged with amusement.

“Missed you,” Hiiragi said simply. “We haven’t seen each other all week. I don’t like this — different schools, different bands. You should be with me — and Shizu-chan. A week without you is too long.”

“It was five days.”

“Too long,” Hiiragi repeated, pressing a lazy kiss to Mafuyu’s temple.

They fell quiet again. Hiiragi kept tracing those slow patterns along Mafuyu’s spine, feeling the way his muscles softened more with every minute. The tension that had been there earlier — the determination, the need — had burned itself out into something warm and loose and satisfied.

Seeing him bare like this drove it home in a way that still surprised Hiiragi sometimes — they weren’t kids anymore. He was growing.

He’d always been the shortest one in their group. Seeing how much Mafuyu had grown made Hiiragi’s chest tighten.

My — not boyfriend, not exactly — whatever we are — is really hot, Hiiragi thought, a little dazed by it.

For a second he remembered fourteen-year-old Mafuyu shaking in his arms, refusing to talk. He was usually a smart-mouthed little shit. But so earnest about sex. And worse after Yuki. The weight against him now felt different. Steadier.

And he was so vocal all the way through. It might have earned a noise complaint. Or actually damaged his voice.

After a while, Hiiragi spoke, voice low and fond.

“Remember when you got so worked up about our first time?”

Mafuyu made a soft noise that might have been a laugh. Or a groan.

“I guess you figured it all out,” Hiiragi continued, thumb brushing gently over Mafuyu’s shoulder blade.

There was no teasing in it. Just wonder. Just love.

Mafuyu tilted his head slightly, enough that Hiiragi could see his face — flushed, eyes heavy, completely open in that post-pleasure softness that only existed when he felt safe.

“The secret was the same as always,” Mafuyu said.

Hiiragi blinked. “Yeah?”

Mafuyu shifted closer, pressing his forehead lightly under Hiiragi’s chin.

“You,” he said.

The word landed with quiet certainty.

Not dramatic. Not embarrassed. Just true.

He pushed the thought of Ritsuka Uenoyama to the back of his mind. That didn’t matter right now. Not when Mafuyu was here, soft and warm against him.

Hiiragi’s chest tightened — sharp enough that he had to pull in a slow breath. The same overwhelming feeling he’d had as a teenager when Mafuyu trusted him with something fragile, except deeper now. Bigger. Earned over years instead of hoped for.

His hand stilled for a moment on Mafuyu’s back before resuming its slow movement.

“You’re ridiculous,” Hiiragi whispered, voice unsteady.

Mafuyu shook his head faintly against him. “No.”

Another pause.

“I was scared back then,” Mafuyu continued softly. “Not because of… what we were doing. I figured out that I liked sex. Sex with you pretty quickly.”

He paused, fingers tightening slightly in the sheet.

“But because I didn’t want to lose what we already had. Everything already felt like it was breaking after Yuki. I didn’t think I could survive losing you too.”

After Ugetsu had swept into Mafuyu’s life and then, just as abruptly, stepped back out of it, Mafuyu had been left raw in ways he didn’t fully understand yet. It had been Hiiragi who stayed. Hiiragi who helped him piece himself back together, even while they were both still hurting from Yuki.

They hadn’t figured out what they were — not really. Mafuyu still insisted they were just friends.

Friends, Mafuyu said. Hiiragi let the word sit there. It didn’t matter. He wasn’t going anywhere.

He was aware, though, that whoever this Uenoyama guy was, he was going to matter. Hiiragi could feel it already.

Hiiragi swallowed. “We didn’t lose each other,” he said.

“No,” Mafuyu agreed, eyes closing. “We didn’t. Even though I really tried to screw it all up…”

“That’s not all on you. I didn’t help things either. And we both were really struggling after Yuki…” The intensity wasn’t about urgency or frustration. It was about certainty. A determination to overwrite the trauma of Yuki’s final, violent act with something gentle. To prove that not everyone who loves you leaves — not Hiiragi, and not Shizusumi either.

They lay there in the quiet, bodies cooling, breaths gradually syncing.

After a minute, Mafuyu’s fingers curled lightly into the fabric of the pillow near Hiiragi’s shoulder — a sleepy, instinctive anchor. Mafuyu exhaled and melted closer, trusting his weight completely.

Hiiragi tightened his arm around him in response, holding him close.

Not with urgency now.

Just with certainty that Mafuyu was here.

Notes:

I’ve been adding sequels, follow ups and additional chapters to several older stories. It’s been a fun way to build the background foundation for Winter’s Holly while I work on finishing a couple of my longer stories.

Notes:

A little piece of tender. In Winter’s Holly, Mafuyu decided he was not ready for sex. So he deliberates and tries to educate himself. And gets a lot more than he bargained for. But his friends have his back.
This takes place a few weeks after Winter’s Holly.
