Shane woke up feeling light. Not the ‘wow, i feel amazing’ light, but the one where you feel a little sick and proud.
He groaned and turned to his side.
A warm, fuzzy feeling filled his chest.
Lying next to him was Ilya Rozanov. Ottawa Centaurs captain. Stanley cup champion. His fiancé.
That still felt surreal.
Ilya was sleeping very peacefully. Shane almost didn't want to wake him up, but he had to. He didn't want to open social media on his own.
Shane gently tugged on his ear and whispered “Hey, beautiful.”
Almost instantly, Ilya opened his eyes.
It took him a second to process where he was, but as soon as he saw Shane, his face lit up.
“Moy lyubimyy!” He chirped, wrapping Shane in a bear hug.
“Good morning to you, too.” Shane giggled.
Ilya just grinned even wider.
“What do you want to do today, zayka?”
“Rabbit?”
“Mhm,” Ilya said, burrowing his face into Shane's bare chest. “Boing, boing.”
Shane reached for his phone, and Ilya grumbled.
“Already? You want to know about media stuff? Can’t we wait until tomorrow?”
Shane sighed and turned his phone off.
“Sorry. I really am. I can’t help it.”
Ilya let out a nasty burp and Shane punched his arm.
“Hey!! Do not bully your hungover fiancé, he’s been through enough!”
Shane smiled. “Manners, mister soon-to-be husband.”
“Husband.” Ilya hummed. “I like that.”
Shane pressed a soft kiss to his jaw.
“I love you.”
The next day, Shane could hardly wait. He and Ilya had agreed to no socials yesterday, but his brain was going to explode if he didn't know what others had to say. He felt bad, but he couldn't help it.
Shane guiltily stood up and walked out of his bedroom.
When he reached the living room couch, he almost immediately opened his phone.
The messages were all that you would expect. Congratulations. He made a mental note to read those later.
With a sigh and heavy heart, he opened twitter.
The first post caught Shane by surprise.

Shane felt his stomach sink. He opened the replies.

After scrolling for ages, liking posts from all his friends, Shane stumbled across a post that made his heart ache harder.

All of a sudden, Shane heard thumping coming from the stairs. Shit. Shane attempted to hide his phone, but it was too late.
“Attempting to hide something, Hollander?”
“No. I’m so sorry. I couldn’t wait.”
“It's ok, Moy lyubimyy. I understand.” Ilya slid onto the couch next to Shane and kissed him. “Let's look together now, ok?”
“What did I do to deserve you?”
“Everything. Absolutely everything.”
