Chapter Text
AUGUST 21ST, 1994
Right.
I haven't written in a long time, so I'm kind of trying to get used to it again. It's been a while. It certainly has, I think? ow many years? Eleven? Eleven, I think so. That's a long time. It's a bit strange, writing again, after spending so much time being...dead? Would dead be the correct term? No, more like comatose. Right. That makes more sense. It certainly feels strange to pick up a pen and just start writing again. On paper. After so much time spent in...nothing. I can't even remember how it was being comatose. I can't really remember much of anything, actually. I had to be reminded of my own name...which is definitely sort of...embarassing? I don't know. I think so. Anyways...
My name is Edward Sinclair Afton, and I'm...er, I think I just turned 23 years old, eleven days ago. On August 10th. Right. That was my birthday. August 10th, 1971. I don't know how I forgot that. I...well, I don't remember anything, but, my...brother, Michael, told me I had a, as he put it, "real ugly" accident 11 years ago, and spent those years in a coma. I don't remember any of it. Then again, I don't remember anything, really. I barely could remember Michael's face. Or my sister's. What was her name? Melissa? Oh, right, it was Elizabeth. Right. Scratch that. I...don't know what has happened in those past few years. I just got out of the hospital, I think, a week ago? I've been relearning a lot of things; how to walk, how to write, eat, drink...it's like I just stopped being a human for eleven years. Just stuck in some sort of stasis. An inanimate state, between life and death. I'm also sort of beginning to remember some things from back then, but not a lot. I remember it was a lot sunnier, though. A lot more sunny than this, anyway. It's very rainy and cloudy nowadays. I'd even say it's exaggeratedly rainy and cloudy. I mean, it seems a bit abnormal. Going off topic, apologies.
I also remember there being a lot more people. And...a lot more friends. I think? I don't know. I'm not too sure. I think I wasn't a very popular person back then. But I still remember having more, uh, friends. I haven't seen any of them yet, and I can't remember much about them, except about two of them, I think? Two girls. One had black spiky hair in fluffy pigtails, and she always wore some type of yellow or gold-coloured clothes. The other had long brown hair and...right, I remember she had green eyes. Sort of like Elizabeth, except Elizabeth has red hair. And the other one had, very peculiar, differently-coloured eyes. I think that's called "heterochromia". I can't remember their names. No matter how hard I try, I just can't. I tried asking Michael or Elizabeth about it, but they didn't tell me anything. It's...strange. Everyone around me acts very secretively and oddly. They all seem very sad about something, but I just can't for the life of me figure out why. I tried asking my father about it too...William is his name. He shrugged it off, though. I didn't get a meaningful answer from anyone, unfortunately.
The first time I woke up, I think, a week ago, it was...strange. It felt like waking up from a surreal, life-long dream. A dream of life, if I want to be more poetic about it. But it was also a dream of nothing at times. But at first, when I opened my eyes, or, well, my one eye, I couldn't see anything. Just black. All I heard was a gasp from someone in the room and hurried footsteps outside. Then, some more footsteps came into the room, multiple people, and they were talking and doing something that I didn't see. I tried talking, but nothing intelligible came out. I had just forgotten how to speak English. All that was was gibberish. And that's about all I remember from that day. The days after, I was visited by my family. No friends, though. I still can't figure out what happened to my friends. I slowly got vision back in one eye; it sort of just turned from black to blurry to clearer again. But the same didn't happen for the other eye, which perplexed me a bit, initially, until the doctor told me why; I didn't have another eye anymore. It was just gone. Apparently, it had been crushed in the accident, or popped out or God knows what happened to it, but I lost it. Eleven years ago...god, eleven years. Since I turned eleven, the only place I'd ever been in was the hospital. It's like the hospital just became my home for eleven years. It's a depressing statement.
I'm going to write tomorrow as well, but right now I just want to lay down and just take a nap. It's too much for me. I don't know how I feel about this whole situation. Well, for one, I'm glad I'm alive, but... I'm confused. Where has everyone else gone? I should try asking again.
P.S. The girls' names were Cassidy and Charlie, I remember now! Cassidy was the one with the black hair and Charlie with the brown hair, I think? I don't remember much else. Tomorrow, it is, I suppose.
