Chapter 8: Voice | "Someone Who Has Already Made Up Their Mind"

Summary:

"Write a scene in the voice of a narrator who has completely and firmly decided something: that they are done with a friendship, that they are not going to audition, that they are never going back to a place they once loved. The decision has already been made before the scene begins. Your narrator is not wrestling with it. They are simply living inside it. The challenge is this: as the scene unfolds, let the reader feel everything the narrator is working hard not to feel. The narrator's voice should stay steady, even a little flat, almost matter-of-fact. But the details they choose, the things they linger on without meaning to, and the moments where their sentences get slightly longer than they need to be should quietly betray them. The voice says the decision is settled. The writing should suggest it is anything but."

Chapter Text

Elphaba glared in the direction of the city. She’d never go back, there was no reason to. Well.. there was one, not that Glinda was important enough to actually go back for. No, they had only known each other for a year in college, that was all it was. She sat back onto a log next to where her broom was propped up, going to the city is too dangerous anyways, it's safer out here. It was lonely, but solitude meant security. But oh how’d she miss Glinda’s rambling while she did her makeup in the mornings, their lunches together, their–now friendly–debates about nothing and everything. Her eyes softened, shoulders dropping. She didn’t need Glinda, but oz did she want her, she ached for her. There were more important things to do than sulk over the blonde like helping the animals, but her thoughts kept drawing back to her. Perhaps a selfish visit back couldn’t hurt.
