Chapter Text

The lounge was unusually quiet - soft light, a few scattered students, the faint hum of something peaceful for once.

Sonia Nevermind entered with her usual composed grace… and immediately paused.

Across the room, seated on a couch with a handheld console resting loosely in her lap, Chiaki Nanami was staring.

Not at her game.

Not at the wall.

But very specifically at-

Kazuichi Souda and Gundham Tanaka.

Who were, at that exact moment, bickering quietly over something small and completely unnecessary.

“I said that’s not how it connects- ”

“And I said your approach lacks foresight- ”

“It does NOT - just hold it steady!”

“…like this?”

“Yeah- no- wait- yeah, like that- ”

Chiaki’s eyes followed them with laser focus.

Completely absorbed.

Controller idle.

Sonia’s expression lit up instantly.

“…ah,” she murmured.

She approached slowly, carefully, as though not wanting to disturb a rare phenomenon.

“Miss Nanami,” she said softly.

Chiaki blinked - once, slowly - and tilted her head up.

“…oh. Hi, Sonia.”

“You are not playing your game.”

“…mm. I paused.”

Sonia followed her gaze back to Souda and Gundham.

“…I see.”

A small pause.

Then-

“…they’re interesting,” Chiaki added.

Sonia placed a hand gently over her chest.

“I quite agree.”

They both watched in silence for a moment.

Souda groaned. “Why are you so calm about this?!”

“Because agitation will not solve the problem.”

“It might make me feel better!”

“That is irrelevant.”

“…it is NOT irrelevant!”

Chiaki blinked again.

“…he gets louder when he’s flustered.”

“Yes,” Sonia said, voice soft with deep satisfaction. “It is one of his defining traits.”

Another pause.

“…and the other one,” Chiaki continued, nodding slightly toward Gundham, “…he doesn’t change much.”

“Externally, no,” Sonia said. “But internally? Quite dynamic.”

Chiaki hummed quietly.

“…that’s good.”

Sonia turned to her, eyes shining.

“You understand.”

“…a little.”

Sonia sat beside her, posture still perfect but energy noticeably more animated.

“I have spent considerable time observing and guiding their development,” she said. “What you see before you is the result of careful study, strategic intervention, and emotional calibration.”

Chiaki looked at her.

Then back at them.

“…you made them like that?”

“I would not say ‘made,’” Sonia replied modestly. “Rather… facilitated their natural progression.”

Souda, in the background: “Stop saying it like that!”

Gundham: “It is an accurate description.”

Chiaki’s lips curved slightly.

“…they’re kind of in sync.”

Sonia clasped her hands together, visibly delighted.

“Yes! Precisely!”

Another quiet moment passed as they both watched.

Souda handed Gundham a tool without being asked.

Gundham took it without comment.

No argument.

No hesitation.

Chiaki’s eyes tracked the movement.

“…that’s new,” she said.

Sonia nodded proudly. “A recent development.”

“…nice.”

Sonia leaned in slightly, lowering her voice like she was sharing something important.

“They have achieved a balance. One expressive, one composed. One reactive, one steady.”

Chiaki nodded slowly.

“…like complementary mechanics.”

Sonia gasped softly. “Exactly!”

A pause.

Then Chiaki added, very casually-

“…it’s kind of cute.”

Sonia froze.

Then- very slowly-

she turned her head.

“…yes,” she said carefully. “It is.”

Chiaki blinked.

“…when they argue, it feels like they’re not really arguing.”

“Correct.”

“…and when they’re quiet, it feels louder.”

Sonia’s eyes widened.

“…yes.”

Chiaki looked back at them.

“…I like watching.”

Sonia placed both hands over her heart.

“Oh my…”

A beat.

Then, gently-

“…do you often observe dynamics like this?”

Chiaki tilted her head slightly.

“…sometimes. In games. And… here.”

Sonia leaned closer.

“…and what do you think of this particular pairing?”

Chiaki considered for a moment.

“…one pushes. One holds steady.”

“Yes…”

“…but they both stay.”

Sonia inhaled sharply.

“…that is… an excellent analysis.”

Chiaki nodded once.

“…it works.”

Sonia smiled - soft, proud, and just a little emotional.

“…it does.”

Another quiet stretch passed.

Then-

“…do you have names for it?” Chiaki asked.

Sonia blinked. “Names?”

“…like… categories.”

Sonia hesitated.

Then, with dignified composure:

“…I have conducted classifications, yes.”

Chiaki looked at her.

“…can you tell me later?”

Sonia placed a hand over her chest again, deeply moved.

“It would be my honor.”

In the background-

“Stop hovering!” Souda snapped.

“I am not hovering.”

“You’re literally right behind me!”

“…proximity is irrelevant.”

“IT IS VERY RELEVANT- ”

Chiaki watched.

Sonia watched.

And somewhere in that quiet, shared observation-

a new understanding began to take root.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

“…I think I get it,” Chiaki murmured.

Sonia smiled.

“…welcome,” she said gently.

And just like that-

another flower quietly bloomed.
