Chapter 5: The Post

Chapter Text

Rose wanted to post the photo the next morning. She cropped it for now, just showing off the moon in the background: As much as she wanted to cover her insta in photos of Svetlana, she was fine waiting just a bit longer. Plus, it’d be fun to be cryptic, like she had said. She cropped it in the editor, making sure that only the sky (and a bit of Svetlana’s gorgeous hair) was visible.

She really deliberated on the caption. Normally, she liked to write quite a bit, especially for things commemorating milestones. But for this? Rose wasn’t sure. She wanted to declare her love for Svetlana, and each caption was undeniable. It was tough to be cryptic when all she wanted to do was brag to the world about the amazing woman who was her fiancée.

She thought back to things that might work as the caption. Maybe a poem? She’d love to write a poem from scratch, but that’d need to be perfect, and she’d rather a love poem be private.

Rose rested her chin on her hand, looking up at Svetlana. She was making pancakes, specifically oladi. She didn’t cook often, but she had been particularly determined today to make them for Rose. They smelled amazing, kind of like home. Well, Svetlana was home, but there was something of the smell of pancakes wafting throughout their house that made it feel realer than usual.

“Have you seen the play Much Ado About Nothing?” Rose asked. “Or read it?”

Svetlana looked over at her as she poured more batter onto the pan. “I don’t think I have, why?”

“There’s a quote that I want to use for the caption.” Rose said. “Whenever I hear it, you’re what comes to mind.”

A slight blush graced Svetlana’s cheeks. “What is the quote?”

“I do love nothing in the world so well as you.” Rose said. Svetlana seemed a bit more flustered at this, Rose smiling. “I mean it. You’re everything to me.”

Svetlana looked at her, her expression somewhat unreadable. She was happy, for sure, or at least it seemed that way, but she quickly turned off the stove. “I was making a romantic breakfast, and now you’ve outdone me, Моя звезда.” She pouted, moving closer. Rose sat up, pursing her lips. Svetlana pretended to be annoyed, but still gave her a quick kiss.

“The breakfast is still romantic. I might also fall in love with the smell of pancakes.” Rose hummed.

“Maybe I will not let you taste then, hm?” Svetlana said, though she set a plate with a few of them down in front of Rose. They were all the perfect looking ones, at least judging from how Svetlana’s plate had the ones that were slightly less round. All of them really did look perfect though, almost like what’d you see in a commercial. “Don’t eat them yet, I want to make them look cute with jam.” She smiled, quickly grabbing it from the fridge. “Is it okay to put sour cream on yours?”

“Make it exactly like how you like it.” Rose smiled. “I’d love to try with the sour cream.”

“It may be an acquired taste-”
“I’ll acquire it.” Rose said, watching as Svetlana carefully spooned it onto the pancakes, topping it with some raspberry jam. “I want to post a picture of this too.”
“Really?”
“Yes, my first breakfast as an engaged woman.” Svetlana kissed her cheek at the comment, Rose grinning. “Is that okay?”
“They are not perfect-”

“Anything you do is perfect.” Rose hummed. “These literally look like one of those cookbook photos that you think are impossible to make. I’m drooling right now.”

“You-” Svetlana sighed, kissing Rose’s cheek again. “You can take a picture now. Then, tell me how it tastes. Be honest!”

Rose carefully took the photo, making sure that she did Svetlana’s cooking justice by actually having it be somewhat well photographed. It looked delicious even in the picture, and Rose quickly set her phone aside. “Is there a golden ratio of topping to pancake, or…” Rose trailed off, glancing at Svetlana.

“It depends.” She shrugged. “I like a lot of jam with a touch of cream.”

Rose nodded, using the fork to cut off a piece of the oladi, adding jam and the sour cream to her forkful before taking a bite.

Rose wouldn’t expect for sour cream to taste good on a pancake, but it really was doing something crazy for her tastebuds. Maybe it was the love that Svetlana had cooked the oladi with, or the combination of flavors, or just the thought of her fiancée cooking her breakfast, but Rose felt like she was on Cloud 9. Perhaps even Cloud 10, if that was possible. “Ohmhghd-” She said, her voice muffled by the bite. “It’s so good, baby. Actually insane!” She took another bite, doing a little shimmy in her seat. “Elevnnoutften!”

“What?”

“Eleven out of ten!” Rose said. “No wait, actually, like 100 out of ten. This is so fucking good. I want these every day.” She went to take another bite, pausing. “If you want to make them. If not, it's okay.”

“I’d make anything for you.” Svetlana smiled. “You really like them that much?”

“‘Like’ does not even begin to describe how much I love these.” Rose said. “I’m gonna dream about these.”

Svetlana laughed. “They’re pretty easy to make.” She said, reaching with a fork to take from Rose’s plate, despite hers being right there. If they weren’t the same exact thing, Rose would probably have been annoyed that a meal this tasty got taxed. “Girlfriend tax!”

Fiancée tax.” Rose corrected, reaching to steal from Svetlana’s plate. She took quite a big chunk, and Svetlana fake rolled her eyes, a fond smile on her face.

“That has a nice ring to it.” Svetlana smiled. “Wife tax is going to sound even better.”

Rose swallowed her mouthful, heart beating. It did sound better. “Let’s get married.” Was that jumping the gun too quickly? Rose didn’t really care.

“We can start planning the wedding after we eat, my love.” Wedding! The thought still didn’t feel real.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Rose Landry @RoseLandryOfficial made a post

[ID: A carousel of photos. The first photo showed the night sky illuminated by only the moon. The light reflected on the water, and in the corner was just a bit of curly hair, though not enough to actually tell who it belonged to, especially due to the darkness of the photo.

The second image showed a plate of oladi, a dollop of jam and sour cream in the center of the stack. The photo was positioned in a way where only the plate and a bit of the table were showing.

The third image was a photo Rose had previously posted to her story a few months prior, showing off a bouquet of flowers, mainly consisting of red roses, peonies, and violets. Whereas previously there was an emoji covering part of the bouquet, it was gone, showing a card that read “for my Juliet” in script, accompanied by a heart. End ID.]
