Jason's what?

Chapter 6: Meet the Nightingales

Chapter Text

Jason wasn't supposed to be here.

He informed the family ages ago that he can't make it to the family dinner on this specific saturday. Unfortunately, at some point he made it slip why he can't make it. So of course they decided to pester him even more until he gave up.

So here he was, standing in front of the Wayne Manor with his boyfriend and their Danny's kids. On the day of Danny's birthday. That they were supposed to spend alone, just their little family. But when Jason's siblings heard it was Danny's birthday, they became truly insufferable in their demands to make it the day they'd all meet Danny.

"You sure you wanna do this? We could still go back and celebrate at home like we've been planning to. I keep telling you, this family can be really overwhelming, especially if you meet them all at once. They'll turn this into some crazy interrogation without leaving you any room to breathe."

"Well then, it's a good thing I don't have to breathe," Danny joked. "Relax, I can handle it. They're your family, I want to finally meet them. Besides, we're already here."

Danny barely finished talking when the front door swung open, revealing Cass.

"Hi. Don't just stand. Come in" she ushered them inside. Danny gave his children one more look, making sure they remember what he told them earlier (don't wander off, be polite, no fighting and absolutely no haunting) before following Cass to the dining room. Most of the family was already there, Bruce the only one still missing.

"Work call, should end soon," Cass answered Jason's unspoken question while he and the Nightingales took their seats, pretending they don't notice everyone's eyes staring intensely at them. Well, not everyone's. Cass and Babs acted as usual since they knew the whole family already, Steph and Damian limited their staring to Danny, and Duke... was squinting and averting his gaze.

"You okay, Duke?" Jason asked, successfully taking everyone's attention off the guests.

"Mhm, yeah, I'm fine, just not really used to uh, auras this bright. I just need a second."

"Oh!" Danny exclaimed, effectively bringing everyone's attention back to himself. "Sorry, didn't know you can see auras. Better now?" Danny asked and Duke stopped squinting, but before he could say anything, Bruce entered the room.

"Oh? I was not aware we would have guests today. My name is Bruce, and you are?" he asked, putting on his most polite 'Brucie' smile.

Damian knit his brows.

"What do you mean, father? It has been discussed for over a week that Todd would bring his paramour to tonight's dinner to finally introduce us properly."

"What?" Bruce looked at Damian, and then at everyone else, in clear confusion.

"Hey, uh, did we forget to tell B about the dinner?"

"No, Dick, you're missing the point. Forget the dinner, I think we forgot to tell Bruce that Jason is even dating someone."

Notes:

Yeah, I know this barely counts as the batfam actually meeting Danny. I just thought this seems like a nice place to end. I might someday write a continuation of the dinner in a separate fic but for now that's it. Thank you for reading my first ever fic!
