exit from a loop of regret

Chapter 3: re:verb

Summary:

i'm here, wavering

Chapter Text

Rain sounds different on Gotham rooftops than it does anywhere else. It sounds like static, or radio interference as if it was a city trying desperately to speak through broken speakers.

Damian stands in his studio at three in the morning listening to it strike the windows in uneven percussion while the record player crackles softly nearby.

The painting watches him.

Tim’s eyes follow him now. Not literally, of course. Damian is not losing his mind.

But there is movement in them all the same. The rest of the canvas remains unfinished. Bare charcoal lines sketching shoulders, hair, the shape of a mouth Damian still cannot paint correctly.

Only the eyes are complete.

Stormwater eyes.

Ocean eyes.

Alive.

The record skips.

Crkkt.

Again.

Crkkt.

Again.

Damian closes his eyes.

Somewhere outside, a foghorn groans across Gotham Harbor. Low and mournful., calling something home.

/

Damian balances the phone between shoulder and ear while cleaning brushes.

“JJ hit another warehouse.” Stephanie’s voice crackles through the phone speaker.

The brush slips in his hand.

Drip.

Paintwater tapping the sink basin.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.” A pause. “Witnesses said he kept asking where the lighthouse was.”

Damian stills completely.

Outside, thunder rolls over the harbor.

/

When Damian was young, he once spent three hours sitting atop Gotham Lighthouse during a storm because he wanted silence.

Instead, Tim found him. The younger boy arrived drenched, furious, and wheezing from climbing the spiral stairs too quickly.

“I hate you!” he announced immediately.

Damian didn’t look away from the ocean. “You climbed eighty-seven meters voluntarily. This seems a personal failing.”

“You disappeared for six hours!”

“I desired solitude.”

“You picked a literal lighthouse during a thunderstorm!”

Lightning split the horizon white-blue.

The beacon overhead rotated with a deep mechanical hum.

Wummm.

Wummm.

Wummm.

Tim collapsed beside him against the railing, soaked through completely. His camera hung uselessly around his neck beneath his jacket.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Only waves crashing against cliffs below.

Wind shrieking through metal beams.

The slow revolving groan of the lighthouse lantern.

“You know ships use these to find home, right?” Tim asked quietly.

Damian frowned faintly. “I understand the purpose of a lighthouse, Drake.”

“I just think it’s funny.”

“What is?”

Tim smiled a little without looking at him.

“No matter where I look in Gotham, I always end up finding you standing somewhere high up with a light behind you.”

Damian’s pulse stumbled strangely.

Tim continued, softer now. “Like you’re always waiting for something.”

The ocean below crashed violently against stone.

Damian stared out at the black water and thought: I was not waiting until you arrived.

Tim leaned his head briefly against Damian’s shoulder. Just long enough for Damian to stop breathing correctly.

/

The explosion happens in the early hours of the morning

Duke gets civilians clear before the fire spreads. Helena cuts power to the docks. Batman disappears into smoke without hesitation.

Damian arrives last.Civilian clothes. Paint beneath his fingernails. Heartbeat too loud in his ears. The entire harbor screaming around him: sirens, waves, helicopter rotors, shouting officers, crackling flames.

Noise layered over noise layered over noise until Gotham itself becomes one endless distorted reverb.

Then—

A gunshot cracks through the fog.

Damian runs before thought catches up. Metal stairs ring beneath Damian’s boots as he sprints up the lighthouse interior. The structure groans around him, ancient bolts shrieking in the storm.

Halfway up—

The next shot deafens the room.

Then silence.

Only rain.

Only the lighthouse mechanism turning.

Chunk.

Whirr.

Chunk.

When he reaches the top, JJ stands with a pistol in one hand and blood running from his temple.

Three Jokerz members lie dead behind him.

Bruce stands a few feet away.

The waves crash beneath.

JJ laughs exhaustedly under his breath.

“You always travel in packs,” he says. The words arrive flatly and empty. Worse than anger. Damian realizes with sudden horror that JJ sounds exactly like Bruce.

Bruce’s voice is painfully calm. “Tim.”

JJ flinches.

Damian hears it: the hitch in breathing, a eskipped rhythm, like a record catching on damaged vinyl.

“I told you,” JJ says quietly, “that’s not my name.”

The rain intensifies. Tat-tat-tat against metal roofs, like static flooding the world.

Damian steps forward before anyone stops him.

JJ’s gun swings toward him instantly. The motion is automatic. Trained. Terrified.

For one suspended moment, only sound exists.

Rain.

Water.

Fire crackling somewhere distant.

Tim’s breathing.

Damian’s breathing.

Two heartbeats horribly out of sync.

The lighthouse beam sweeps across his face: green hair with dark roots, eyes like stormwater. bruises beneath exhaustion.

Then JJ says, almost angrily, “Why do you keep looking at me like that?”

Damian doesn’t answer immediately. when he finally does— “Because I spent three years mourning you.”

JJ goes utterly still.

Behind them, the lighthouse beam sweeps once across the harbor.

White light cutting through rain.

Gone.

Then back again.

“You should not be here,” JJ says.

Damian steps forward anyway.

Rain taps broken glass behind them in uneven rhythm.

“You keep sparing civilians,” Damian says quietly.

JJ’s jaw tightens.

“You leave evidence where Father will find it.”

Silence.

“You left photographs for me.”

“Stop.”

“You remembered me first.”

Stop.” The word cracks this time. JJ backs away sharply, boots splashing through rainwater pooled across the floor. “You don’t understand what happened.”

“Then explain it.”

A laugh frayed apart at the seams escapes JJ suddenly. “That’s the problem.” His voice turns quieter. “I can’t.”

The lighthouse turns again.

Its low mechanical groan fills the silence between them.

JJ presses shaking fingers against his temple. “I remember pieces,” he says. “Sounds mostly.”

Damian stays still.

“Laughter. Camera shutters. Rain.” JJ swallows hard. “Somebody saying my name.”

Tim.

“You know who you are,” Damian says.

“No. I know what Joker made.” The gun lowers fractionally. “He took everything else.”

Outside, thunder rolls across the harbor.

JJ laughs again, smaller this time. “Do you know what’s funny?” he murmurs. “I still look for you.”

Damian’s heart stops.

JJ stares out toward the ocean beyond Gotham Harbor.

“When things got bad after…” He falters. “After him. I kept ending up on rooftops, looking.”

Rain hammers the lighthouse windows.

“I didn’t know why.” His voice turns raw. “I just knew if I climbed high enough, maybe there’d be a light on somewhere.”

The lighthouse beam sweeps over them both.

Searching.

Searching.

Damian suddenly understands.

Tim had always found him because Damian had always left something to find.

A rooftop.

A studio window.

A trail of unfinished conversations.

Like a lighthouse waiting for ships already presumed drowned.

“You idiot,” Damian whispers.

JJ huffs a startled laugh.

For one impossible second, it sounds exactly like Tim again. Then his expression crumples. “I killed people.”

“So have I.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Damian steps closer.

The gun trembles in JJ’s grip.

“I can still hear him sometimes,” JJ admits suddenly, voice barely audible over the storm. “Joker.” His breathing turns uneven again. “Like he’s still echoing around inside my skull.”

Damian remembers suddenly:

Tim at thirteen, talking too loudly because silence frightened him.

Tim humming under his breath while editing photographs.

Tim laughing over comms during patrol.

Tim existing as noise and motion and relentless life.

And now—

A boy haunted by echoes.

Damian reaches forward slowly.

JJ flinches. But he does not run.

“You once told me,” Damian says carefully, “that I was allowed to be Damian.”

JJ’s eyes widen faintly.

“You do not remember saying it,” Damian continues, “but you did.”

Rain rattles against the lighthouse glass hard enough to sound like applause.

“You are allowed,” Damian says softly, “to be Timothy.”

The gun slips from JJ’s fingers.

It hits the floor with a metallic crack.

And Tim—he folds inward with one shattered inhale, hands flying to his face as though trying to physically hold himself together.

Damian catches him before he hits the floor.

The sound Tim makes is awfully small and animal. It was years of pain compressed into something unbearably human.

Damian holds him as he cries.

The lighthouse turns above them.

The fire roars below.

Behind them, Bruce quietly orders everyone else back.

Helena touches Stephanie’s arm before she can move closer.

No one interrupts.

The rain keeps falling.

The lighthouse keeps turning.

And somewhere beneath the noise of Gotham—the sirens, waves, thunder, machinery, all of it—Damian hears it at last:

Just Tim’s heartbeat against his chest.

Alive.

Alive.

Alive.

Notes:

most of (if not all) of this is inspired by sasanomaly's EP, "re:verb". the first ch is inspired by the song "synaesthesia ghost," the second chapter is inspired by the song "she sank into the sea", and the third one is inspired by "re:verb"

the series title "temporary" is also from the EP

if you've noticed i kept editing tim's hair colour. that's because i couldn't decide on whether or not he actually died and was lazarus'd like jason in canon, or not. i ultimately decided against it. he never died in this universe.

also this isn't really reverse robins now is it 😅 because if that were the case duke would have been batkid before damian. but i wanted it to be damian after helena, so although they are good now, they are still not close (there's still past jealousy and grievances there: they're both blood children, but helena more or less grew up with a complete family. damian did not have that luxury. add the heir thing and it's just a mess between them.) and that is why damian got close with (eager fanboy) tim. helena has the family, she has the best friend (powergirl), she's gotham born and raised. damian feels very alienated, and here comes tim who think the world first of batkid, and then of him.

after damian starts semi-leaving the batkid mantle, stephanie fills in for him a little, but she ultimately leaves batkid because tim volunteers and she's founding batgirl.

so anyway, yeah. idk how to end this note. oh whale 😅
