Chapter Text
In the wake of the realization, Fluixon opens Thomas’s contact.
If he knows himself at all, he understands that he wouldn’t handle this well alone—he knows his own tendency to run, thank you very much—so it’s better to have backup.
me: Hello.
While he waits for his best friend’s reply, he turns his eyes to stare at the ceiling.
Sidefall’s words from earlier hit him like a truck. The friend already seems to like the person. He just doesn’t want to acknowledge it.
“It’s not that I didn’t want to acknowledge it…” He murmurs, frowning. It hurts his pride a little, to be so thoroughly read by someone. He doesn’t like that—being known to the point of prediction. He wants to pride himself on being more elusive than that.
Still, it’s really not like he wants to… run from Saparata. Saps. Whatever.
If anything, he wants to maintain their friendship, wants to keep what they have going. He enjoys the other’s company too much to give it up for something as flimsy and fickle as feelings. What does it matter, if he likes the other? If that turns out the wrong way, then he’ll forever lose access to the other boy’s smile, laugh, and bright yellow eyes.
Relationships are overrated. Friendships are stable and predictable. Easier to stomach, easier to trust.
He’s almost resolute in his decision to never pursue Saps, when he receives a message from Thomas.
tomom: Hell nah
tomom: I left u alone for too long
tomom: Before u say anything, I WAS SHOWERING
tomom: Now I want u to take whatever u were thinking abt and chuck it OUT the window
tomom: Whatever it is, its the devil talking.
He huffs out, amused. Is he really so predictable?
me: How can you be so sure?
tomtom: ?
tomtom: Tell me ur joking.
me: No, really, how?
tomtom: ?????
tomtom: I’m insulted
tomtom: Maybe u have a new best friend, but I’VE been ur bff since kindergarten
tomtom: Ofc I’d know, do you want me to kill u?
me: Lol
me: Call?
tomtom: Bruh
tomtom: Okz, give me a sec
He assumes that Thomas was throwing some clothes on, what with his tendency to check his phone immediately when coming out of the shower. So, patiently, he waits for the other to ring his phone.
He wiggles up to lay higher on his bed, head resting on too-soft pillows. He eyes a plushie that looks like a white blob, with two dots for eyes and a stupid smile printed on. He’d bickered with Saps, when they saw that plushie. They were in the mall for an errand or another that Saps insisted he accompany Fluixon on, and they’d gotten distracted in the arcade.
It looks like me, He remembers Saps pleading. So you have to get it! Don’t you want a mini Saps on your bed, Flux?
It was awful, being subjected to Saps’s begging. He remembers trying to say, If you want it so bad, you should get it yourself.
But he couldn’t really say no to the other for too long.
With much back and forth, he’d gotten the plush, and now, it sits on his bet every night. (If he snuggles with the stupid thing while sleeping, there’s nobody but himself to witness it, anyways.)
Tentatively, he reaches out, and hugs the plush. It brings him a semblance of comfort, even when he’s still reeling from his own emotions.
Then, his phone chimes.
Having done this a million times before, he accepts on the first ring. Thomas’s face, illuminated by the late afternoon sun, and still somewhat wet from his shower, greets him.
“Yo, dude,” His best friend greets, before squinting. “Is that a plushie?”
Pushing the plush out of camera (and down to rest on his stomach), he blurts out, “I think I like Saps.”
Right… So he was going to tell his friend about that, but he hadn’t meant to say it that abruptly. He feels like his face is about to burst into flames.
“Wow, you’re really red,” It’s even more mortifying, because his friend doesn’t seem phased at all. As if he expected this.
Which, in hindsight, he knows that he was being very obvious, okay? But can’t Thomas at least pretend to not have known? Save him what little pride and dignity he has left? Spare him the embarrassment?
“That’s all you have to say?” He hisses.
Thomas shrugs, “The Conspiracy’s been betting on it.”
“I’m going to ban betting from now on.” He promises darkly. “Was it Rotation?”
“That’s neither here nor there,” The other settles on his own bed, with a suspiciously familiar white plushie in the background. “What we do need to focus on is your feelings. What finally broke the camel’s back?”
He frowns down at his phone camera, “I don’t know. I just didn’t like the thought of him being with… someone else.”
“Pfft, jealousy is what got you?” His friend laughs, and he resists the urge to curse the guy.
“You knew about it, didn’t you.” He accuses.
“Before you say anything! It was Sidefall and Micro’s idea.”
“Guilty by association. I’m killing them and then you.”
“Wait! We still have to get married and have kids—”
“Gross.”
“—but you can target Sidefall.”
“I’m telling him you said that.”
Thomas gasps, “You wouldn’t.”
“Have fun being front page on the gossip panel of the paper for a month straight,” He smirks devilishly.
“I’m telling Micro to not accept you as an in law!” Thomas cries out in fury.
Sticking out his tongue, “Don’t need him to! I’ll have Snowbird and Jophiel on my side, anyways!”
Thomas groans, and he laughs. Then, he notices a notification. “Oh shoot, wait Saps is messaging me.”
“Saps?” Thomas says, wiggling his eyebrows. He rolls his eyes.
Theria Twin #1: fluuuuuxxx
Theria Twin #1: i see ur online :p
Theria Twin #1: wanna play mc?
Theria Twin #1: hop on call!!!
me: Sorry, I can’t rn.

Theria Twin #1: with who?
me: Thomas.
Theria Twin #1: oh ok
Theria Twin #1: maybe next time then
“Well? What did he say?” Thomas asks, eager.
“He wanted to call,” He answers, and he can’t keep the fondness from seeping into his voice.
“And what did you say?”
“I said not right now.”
Thomas nods, thinking. Then he snaps his fingers, “No, yeah, that’s right! You need to play a little hard to get sometimes.”
“Play… hard to get?” He raises a brow.
“Yeah! You can’t always be down, or else they’ll just keep thinking you’re available. Hook, line, and sinker, man.”
“Right… And you know this works because?”
“Because it’s what got Micro so obsessed with me,” Thomas winks, and he fake gags.
“Your confidence is astounding.”
“Thanks, you should try it sometime.”
“I’m very confident in myself, excuse you.”
“Yeah… Sure.” Thomas rolls his eyes, before he shares his screen. “But don’t worry, friend. Now that you’re pure of heart and honest to yourself, you can finally be let in on the plan!”
He rubs his eyes, making sure what he’s seeing is right.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” He asks, genuinely astonished by his friends’ sheer audacity.
It’s a powerpoint presentation that reads: How To Get Together With Your Crush In 10 Easy Steps!: Simplified For Fluixon Aculon :)
He squints, looking at the subtext: P.S. WE’RE ON STEP 3 NOW BTW U’RE LATE TO THE PARTY —SERA
He groans, and Thomas cackles from the other end of the line.
—
They’re somewhat halfway through the presentation when Cynikka knocks on his door, calling for dinner. He bids Thomas farewell (for now, upon the brunette’s insistence), before hanging up.
He notices that there were some chats that he’d missed earlier, as well.
Theria Twin #1: r u still on the call? :((
Theria Twin #1: our base feels lonely w/o u btw
Theria Twin #1: jus saying

me: I’m going to kill your dog.
Theria Twin #1: YOU WOULDNT
me: :)
“Flux!” Cynikka calls from downstairs. He smells the scent of food wafting into his room, and he can immediately tell it’s papa’s cooking. “What’s taking you so long!”
“Coming!” He calls, standing up from his bed.
Theria Twin #1: evil evil man
Theria Twin #1: evil conniving dictator
Theria Twin #1: bald conniving evil dictator man
me: Lol, what does that even mean?
Theria Twin #1: exactly what it says!!!
me: Whatever. I’m going to eat dinner.

Theria Twin #1: OK. WHAT EVER
Theria Twin #1: u didnt even ask if im gonna eat
Theria Twin #1: u actually hate me
Theria Twin #1: :(((((
me: Go eat or I won’t talk to you again.
Theria Twin #1: !!!!
Theria Twin #1: so u do care!
“Flux!”
“Coming, geez!” He huffs, shutting his phone off and rushing downstairs. He hurriedly takes a seat, and ignores the pointed look his older sister gives him.
Dinner was the usual affair, and nothing was out of the ordinary, if not for the more delicious food, courtesy of papa. He hurries on finishing his chores, before rushing upstairs.
He notices the Conspiracy’s group chat is active, before he even notices Saps’s chats.
Opting to see what the fuss was all about (the chat was rarely active now, for some reason), he’s bombarded with a dozen chats a second.
THE CONSPIRACY

Sera: LESS CHATTING MORE CALLING LOSERS
By the time Fluixon joined the call, everyone’s devolved into screaming. He has to reach for his earphones before he attempts to understand them.
“All I’m saying is Snowbird needs to wear headphones with proof—” Thomas is yelling, passionate and angry, over Seraphim and Gotoga.
Snowbird’s even louder, as he exclaims, “I’m literally not even that loud!”
“—or else we won’t be talking about Operation Fluxarata at all!”
“Guys, what are we even doing?” He sighs, already tired.
“Flux!” Snowbird yells, “Defend me!”
He receives a notification from Saps, then.
Theria Twin #1: r u calling with snowbird..
me: Lol, yeah.
Theria Twin #1: oh ok
Theria Twin #1: no mc tonight?
me: I don’t think so, the Conspiracy is insistent.
Theria Twin #1: got it
Theria Twin #1: ummm can you just tell snowbird to tone it down
Theria Twin #1: im going to sleep
me: Sure, no problem.
me: You won’t be grinding tonight?
Theria Twin #1: nah
Theria Twin #1: sleepy
me: Alright.
“Snowbird, tone it down,” He speaks again, after closing their chats. “Saps is sleeping.”
“Ooooooh,” Seraphim giggles, obviously enjoying this. “You heard him, his boyfriend is sleeping.”
“God forbid I be loud in my own house!” The other yells.
“I’ll do your math homework.”
“...Make it four math homeworks.”
“Three.”
“I’m a considerate brother, so I’ll comply with your request,” Snowbird whispers, obviously smug.
“Holy shit, Saps really did a number on him.” Gotoga pipes up, sounding genuinely shocked.
Thomas laughs, “He’d only do our homework if we were about to pass out from overworking, back then.”
“You get me so weak~ In the knees~” Hvyrotation begins singing, off tune and grating.
“Shut up, Rotation.” He hisses.
“Hey, so you’re in on the Operation now, right?” Seraphim asks, effectively cutting off the squabble that was sure to arise. “We’re on Step 3, by the way.”
“Yes, I read your presentation,” He rolls his eyes. “And I already know his type.”
“Holy shit, really?” Snowbird whispers. “Even I don’t know his type!”
“Yeah, he told me earlier,” He nods, and recalls what Saps says. “Uhh… Someone shorter, smart, a bit mean, and… Nonchalant, I think? I think he also said something about dressing like… A grandpa, or whatever.”
The call is silent.
“Hello?” He asks, raising a brow. Everyone was so triggerhappy earlier, why the silence now?
“Holy fuck,” Seraphim sobs out, and she sounds like she was in pain. “I can’t believe Flux is one of our top students.”
“There, there,” Gotoga says with humor, although he also sounds somewhat tired.
“Guys, be nice,” Thomas scolds, but he sounds like he’s holding back laughter. “Remember, we’re here to help.”
“Not me,” Snowbird pipes up. “I’m already struggling on the other side of things, so I’m just here to make fun of you all.”
“Shut up, Snowbird,” Hvyrotation rolls his eyes.
“Hello? Context?” He asks impatiently.
Thomas takes it upon him to answer for the others, “The context is that at least we can head on to step 4! Drum roll?”
Gotoga begins slamming his palms on his table, before Seraphim cuts in, “Trying to cater to what he likes!”
He pauses.
“Right… And I do that, how?” He genuinely doesn’t know how to cater to Saps’s type, not when it was so specific. It was as if he had someone in mind, almost.
“Wait…” He says, a sudden realization. The others hold their breath, recognizing the look in his eyes.
“Don’t tell me…” Snowbird whispers, but he sounds as if he were on the edge of his seat.
“No way… Did he actually…?” Gotoga replies, dubious.
“Guys. Guys.” He starts, as if awakening, because how could he have not noticed before?
“What? WHAT?” Thomas asks, giddy. He can hear how big the smile on his face is.
“Saps already has someone he likes!” He exclaims.
“And…?” Hvyrotation asks, as if he’s expecting him to add to the sentence.
He furrows his brows, “What do you mean, and? He already has someone he likes. It’s so obvious! He didn’t even try to hide it! We have to figure out who it is.”
Everyone simultaneously groans.
“What?” He asks, genuinely confused.
—
Fluixon wakes up at 5:00 AM sharp, as he always had.
Ever since the fateful day that he’d woken up late, he began making sure he set at least a dozen alarms. He doesn’t want a repeat of that disastrous day, after all.
Still… He considers not standing up, tired from staying up in the call with the Conspiracy. It was chaotic, if nothing else. He’s not exactly sure if there would be anything fruitful from their plans, but he supposes he’s willing to give it a shot. He’s not one to cut his corners on effort, anyways.
Better to say he tried his best than not try at all.
Standing up, he sets the mood for the day with a bounce in his steps.
He will get to Saps’s heart, even if the other may already be eyeing someone else.
Armed with motivation, he starts his routine.
…He didn’t take into account Saps’s weird behavior when he and the Conspiracy had been planning, though.
“What’s wrong?” He asks suspiciously, after the other had reached for his bag without saying anything. Usually, whenever they meet in the mornings, the other would have something or the other to ramble about. It’s weird to see him so quiet.
“Hm? Nothing,” The other smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. He raises a brow, and holds onto his bag.
“It’s fine—you don’t have to carry my bag,” He says, tugging.
Saps tugs back, “I want to.”
“Do you really?” He frowns. “You seem to be in a bad mood.”
The other deflates, and his grip turns lax. He pouts, looking at Fluixon as if he’s looking for something in the other’s eyes.
“...I’m okay.” He sighs, then. “Just didn’t sleep well.”
Fluixon lets go of his bag, letting the other take it. Then, he boops Saps’s nose. “Okay, if you say so.”
The other flushes, and he feels a bit proud of himself for that move. He resists the urge to smirk. Hook, line, and sinker.
Still, the weird behavior continues on.
When he was walking down the hallway with Thomas, heading to another class, Saps called out for him, just to ask him how to tie a tie.
He raised a brow, “You’ve been wearing the tie fine until now.”
Saps only smiled. “I forgot how to.”
He sighs, urging the other to lean down so that he could tie it for him.
“You’re impossible, you know that?” He murmurs, trying to ignore how he can feel Saps’s breath on the crown of his head, or how close they are. Instead, he focuses on making sure his hands don’t shake.
Another, when they were headed for lunch. He was talking with Thomas, again, when Saps actually, honest to god, pulled him closer by the waist.
He raised a brow at the taller, but Saps only smiled.
He looks at Thomas, asking silently what the hell was happening, but the brunette only shrugs.
And at the lunch table? It was impossible. Saps would spoonfeed him some of his own food, in front of the others. When he tried to refuse, Saps only frowned, and how can he say no to a frowning Saps?
He thinks he owes Snowbird an apology.
Anyway, case in point—Saps was being weird.
“And I don’t know why!” He finishes his rant, throwing his hands into the air.
Seraphim sighs deeply, side eyeing her friend. “Listen, just stick to the plan. It’ll all work out.”
“How do I stick to the plan when he makes it so hard to be nonchalant and mean and— ugh! We should just kill who he likes right now!”
“Dude, get it together.”
“I’m trying!”
“Get it together better, then! If it’s hard to say no to him now, then just imagine how hard it’ll be when he gets together with his crush! Lock the hell in!”
He sighs, frowning. Seraphim’s right. He can’t let someone else get the upper hand. He needs to up his game.
“Fine. Fine. I’m nonchalant, mean, and short.” He says to himself as a form of peptalk.
“...You already are,” Seraphim murmurs, all sass.
“I heard that.” He hisses.
Then, he hears Saps calling his name down the hallway. He pauses, and so does Seraphim, waiting for the other to catch up to them.
“Flux!” The older beams, and if he had a tail, it would be wagging at light speed. “Are we going home now?”
He pauses, looking at Seraphim. She raises a brow, and it goads him on.
Nonchalant, mean, and short. He tells himself.
“Sorry,” He tries to say as offhandedly as he can. “I’m going to a cafe with Sera. You can go ahead today.”
Saps visibly deflates, the sides of his smile tugging downwards. He steels himself and grabs Seraphim’s hand, going to leave.
As they’re walking, Seraphim begins cracking up. She cries out, “Holy shit!”
He turns to her, genuinely confused, “What?”
“You’re so mean, I’m actually crying!” She says, still laughing. She tugs her hand out of his to open her phone, presumably to tell the others what happened.
He’s confused—wasn’t he supposed to act mean?
—
The plan has been going for a week now. Step 4 of it, anyway.
The midterms have already ended, and now they’re in the last lap of their term, before finals rolls around. Fluixon feels as if he’s getting Saps withdrawal.
“When will step 4 end?” He bemoans, deflated. He seriously needs to hang out with Saps before he ends up killing himself.
“Well,” Hvyrotation pipes up, disassembling his sandwich. Freak. “Step 5 is getting closer to him, and you’ve been doing the opposite of that, so I don’t know.”
“Ask bossman,” Snowbird says, bags under his eyes. “But do it quick. I can’t do this anymore.”
“Hey, why am I bossman?” Thomas frowns, mouthful of food.
“You were the one who suggested this,” Seraphim shrugs as she takes a seat.
“I’m beginning to think you’re actually trying to sabotage me.” Fluixon groans.
“What.” Thomas says, glaring at him. “Saps has been hanging off of your arm the past week!”
“It doesn’t matter if I have to keep pushing him away!” He argues.
“And why’s that?” Saps asks behind him. He has a scary smile on his face.
The entire table turns pale.
“Um… Sidefall?” Thomas tries, wincing. Snowbird pinches him. Not the time.
Saps looks at them, expecting an answer. It doesn’t come.
So, he sets his tray down, an upset expression on his face, and turns around.
“Saps, wait!” Fluixon calls out, but he doesn’t stand.
The table is quiet.
Then, Seraphim bursts, “What are you waiting for?”
“Go after him!” Snowbird urges with her. “I’m killing you if you hurt him, Flux, I swear to god—”
“Right, right!” He yells, standing up. He already has a vague idea of where the other could have gone off to.
—
The squeak of shoes against waxed wooden floors is a distinct sound that can only really come from the gymnasium. There isn’t many people around this area of school when it’s lunch time, and although people do hang around in the gym, there’s no people right now.
He only sees Saps, playing around with a basketball, dribbling and walking around.
He opens the door, and he’s sure the other knows he’s there, because it’s an unmistakable sound. Still, Saps doesn’t turn to look at him, as he usually would.
…That’s most likely his fault.
“Hey…” He tries, approaching the other. “I’m uh… I’m sorry that you overheard that back there.”
The dribbling stops, and Saps stops walking around. Fluixon’s facing the other’s broad back, now.
“I didn’t really mean to… hurt you,” He continues, scratching at his chin. This is really awkward. “I was just…”
Then, Saps cuts him off, “Do I make you uncomfortable?”
“What?” He asks, confused. “No! Never.”
Saps turns around, and now he can see in real time just how much he’s hurt him. His eyes are downcast, warm yellow turned a little dull. His eyes are red-rimmed—he must have been crying—and it pains Fluixon.
And it hurts more, knowing he doesn’t have anyone to blame but himself.
“Then why were you avoiding me?” Saps asks softly, looking at Fluixon in the eye.
“I didn’t mean to—”
“Why?”
He worries on his lips, unsure how to answer.
“It hurts, you know.” Saps starts, when he doesn’t speak. “At first, I thought you were just going through something, but you were talking with the others just fine. And then I thought you wanted space, so I tried. But it got a bit lonely, because you wouldn’t even reply to me. So I thought—I must have done something. You must have been uncomfortable. But you say that’s not the case. So… What is it? What’s the reason?”
Fluixon keeps quiet, fiddling with the sleeves of his blazer. He knows he must’ve hurt Saps more than what the other was saying—knows that being ignored sucks. He should’ve known better.
“I’m sorry.” He starts again. “I… should’ve known better.”
“Yeah.” Saps agrees. “But you can stop apologizing. I just want to know why.”
He takes a deep breath, and then admits, “I thought… you would like me better. If I was— a little mean. Like you said.”
This is unbearable. He hates baring himself, laying down his truth, being vulnerable. But he thinks it’s okay, because this is Saps. He deserves that much, at least.
Then, he feels the other’s hand cupping his cheek, guiding him to look back at yellow eyes. Saps is smiling, but it’s not the usual big and bright one. It’s more muted.
“Oh, Flux,” He whispers. “I like you just the way you are.”
Fluixon feels himself shudder, and he feels tears sting his eyes. He doesn’t want to cry, damn it.
…But the comfort of being with Saps was just too much.
He tentatively gets closer to the other, and wraps his arms around him in a hug. He slots his head squarely on the taller’s chest, and wraps his arms around his middle.
Saps huffs fondly, and wraps his arms around Fluixon in turn.
“You don’t have to change yourself for me,” He murmurs into the crown of soft, black hair. “I don’t think I could like anyone else as much as I like you. The real you.”
Fluixon resists the urge to flush. Damn Saps and his platonic affection. He’ll misunderstand, if this continues on.
“...Okay.” He answers, allowing himself to indulge. “I like you… as you are, too.”
Saps laughs above him, and squeezes him tighter. “Yeah?”
“Mm.” He nods. “I could never be uncomfortable with you.”
They stay like that, hugging each other, for a little while longer.
Then, Saps pulls back a little, if only to look at Fluixon in the eyes.
“Promise you’ll tell me if you feel uncomfortable, in the future?” He asks, sincerity in his eyes.
“Yeah.” Fluixon answers.
“Alright. It’s a deal.”
Fluixon’s just glad he can finally go back to being together with Saps all the time. Even if the way Saps talks and acts makes him hope for more, he thinks he’s fine if this is how Saps treats his best friends, so long as he’s the only one.
