Chapter Text
After taking a day to rest, the crew decided to stay at the picnic site a little longer. None of them was eager to return to the circus just yet. Between dealing with Caine's adventures, his tendency to be judgmental whenever their ideas differed from his, and the emotional struggles each of them carried, they welcomed the chance to relax.
The sunset painted the sky in shades of orange, pink, and gold. A gentle breeze drifted across the grassy field, deepening the sense of peace. The picnic table was covered with sandwiches, apples, and other snacks. For once, there were no interruptions, no sudden adventures, and no pressure to rush off somewhere.
Gangle smiled as she looked around at the beautiful scenery.
"Wow, this is lovely," she said happily.
"It sure is," Ragatha replied warmly, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Zooble leaned back in their seat. "Honestly, this is refreshing after Caine's adventure and everything that's been happening lately in the circus."
"Well, this is the adventure you guys wanted," Jax said with a bored shrug. He reached into the picnic basket and grabbed a sandwich. "At least the food's decent."
Nearby, Kinger quietly munched on an apple. As he ate, he noticed a small beetle crawling across the table. His eyes lit up with curiosity. Carefully leaning closer, he smiled at the tiny insect.
"Hello there," he said cheerfully. "It's nice of you to join me."
Back at the circus, Pomni and Caine were still playing with their stress-bee plushies. The soft, squishy toys have become a source of comfort for both, helping ease their anxiety while giving them something fun to do.
“Whee! Caine shouted excitedly. I am a bubbly bee, and I want to play outside!”
Holding his bee plush close, he climbed up a playground ladder before sliding back down with a laugh. Pomni couldn’t help but smile. Watching him was like watching a child having the time of his life at a playground. There was no performance, no grand adventure, and no expectations, just genuine enjoyment.
"You know what? Screw it!" Pomni said.
Without hesitation, she joined him on the playground.
To most adults, it might have seemed childish, but to Caine, it was fun. And for Pomni, it felt like something she hadn't experienced in a long time: joy.
"Yay! That was awesome!" She exclaimed.
Soon, his attention drifted to a nearby swing set. Clutching her bee plush, she sat down and began to swing. Back and forth she went, slowly at first, then higher and faster. As the wind rushed past her face, her thoughts wandered to jolly. For a moment, she felt like a normal teenager again.
"Look at me! Pomni laughed. I am really flying in the sky with my bee plush! This is glorious!"
As she soared through the air, words began forming in her mind. Before she knew it, she was singing.
" I used to be weak,
Now I'm strong,
but sometimes I am still unsure.”
“I used to wonder who I was.
But now I know what I want to do.
I questioned myself about my identity.”
“Who am I?
Honestly, I don't know.
But I want to try.”
“Sometimes I understand my feelings, sometimes I do not.”
One day, I will figure it out.
When the fun ends, the sadness comes back, and I keep it to myself.
“People don't understand.
Especially parents.
Don't tell them.
But someday.
Maybe I'll find the answer.”
“I've forgotten how to be happy. Or maybe I'm still learning.
Something can be explained or not.
There is someone I can become on my own.”
As the final words faded into the evening air, Pomni slowed the swing and hugged her plush tightly against her chest.
Caine had listened to every word.
I never knew you could sing like that, he said softly. It was lovely."
Pomni blinked in surprise.
“And it's nice to see you having fun,” Caine continued, “without all nervousness and anxiety. It is like seeing the real you. Like a teenager enjoying herself.”
He paused.
“I don't understand human emotions or mentally very well. But one thing is certain. I'm glad you're having fun without pretending to be someone else. Trying to be an adult who acts like they know anything.”
Pomni looked at me and smiled warmly.
“Thank you, Caine.”
“You're welcome!” He replies happily.
The crew continued enjoying their picnic long after the sun had disappeared beyond the horizon. By the time a portal finally opened nearby, the sky was blanketed with stars.
Ragatha looked up and smiled.
“Oh, wow. Look at the stars.”
Her voice was filled with wonder.
Kinger adjusted his gaze toward the night sky while holding his apple.
“It looks stunning, don’t you think, my beetle friends?”
The beetle, naturally, offered a response.
Gangle and Zooble chatted quietly about the different shades of blue and purple that still lingered along the horizon. Even Jax found himself looking upward for a moment.
(Well, at least climbing trees and jumping across rocks kept me entertained.) He thought to himself.
A familiar portal suddenly appeared nearby, glowing brightly in the darkness.
The adventure was officially over.
Time to return to the circus.
Kinger sighed. "Well, our time is up."
"It was really fun," Ragatha said.
Gangle nodded. "I agree. This was pleasant."
Zooble crossed their arms. "Honestly, I didn't hate this. In fact, I actually enjoyed it."
Jax shrugged. "Can't wait to get back to the usual nonsense." He paused. "Though this wasn't terrible. It was... alright."
One by one, the group stepped through the portal and returned to the circus.
Naturally, they expected chaos.
Another of Caine’s complaints was that they ignored his adventure.
Some bizarre new obsession.
Both.
Instead, they froze.
The floor was covered in bee plushies. Hundreds of them. Thousands.
The plushies were scattered everywhere, covering so much ground that it was difficult to see the actual floor beneath them.
Zooble stared in disbelief.
"What is this? Caine's bee obsession again?"
Jax groaned.
"Here it comes."
The group waited.
And waited.
Nothing happened.
No dramatic entrance.
No loud complaints.
No reality-warping tantrum.
Nothing.
Then Ragatha pointed toward the playground.
"There they are."
Everyone turned. To their surprise, they found Caine and Pomni happily playing together on the playground. Both were wearing bee costumes. Pomni was sitting on a swing while holding a bee plush. Caine was halfway up a jungle gym, proudly carrying another bee plush under one arm. The two looked completely content.
The crew stared.
Caine waved enthusiastically.
"Hi, everyone!"
An awkward silence followed.
Ragatha slowly turned toward the others.
"Do we ask?"
"Don't," Kinger said immediately.
"Not a single question," Zooble agreed.
For once, I am with them,” Jax said.
The group silently accepted that whatever had happened while they were gone was better left unexplained.
Caine suddenly spoke up.
"I know about the picnic adventure."
The crew froze. A wave of shock passed through the group.
They knew Caine's all-seeing eyes could monitor the circus and his adventures, but none of them expected him to know exactly what they had been doing the entire time.
For a moment, nobody knew what to say. The silence was almost painful. Then Caine smiled.
“I am not mad.”
The crew blinked.
“In fact, I’m glad you all had a great time.”
Now they were even more confused.
Ragatha glanced at Zooble.
Zooble glanced at Jax.
Jax glanced at the floor.
Gangle peeked at Kinger.
The chess piece glances at the bee costumes that the ringmaster and the jester were wearing and does not say a single word.
Nobody knew how to react.
Finally, Kinger broke the silence.
“How did your adventure with Pomni go?”
Ragatha followed with a question of her own.
“Did you two have fun? Even though we left you both behind?”
Caine's eyes lit up.
"We had lots of fun today! So much fun that I think I felt something called joy."
The crew stared.
Pomni raises her hand excitedly. "Yeah! We even took a picture together while wearing our bee costumes."
Everyone slowly turned toward her.
Bee costumes.
Of course.
At this point, nobody was entirely sure whether this was reality or a digital hallucination.
Gangle smiled awkwardly.
"Well... that's good."
Another silence followed.
Nobody had anything else to add.
Eventually, the group headed toward their rooms for the night.
Just as Pomni was about to leave, Caine spoke again.
“Pomni?”
She stopped.
“Yeah?”
Caine tilted his head thoughtfully.
“What does the word ‘friend’ mean?”
Pomni paused.
Caine continued. “I appreciate you and everything you did for me today. So, I wanted to know.”
Pomni thought about the question for a long moment before answering.
"A friend..."
She smiled softly.
"A friend is someone you spend time with and learn to trust. Someone you can have fun with, support when things go wrong, and share experiences with. They're people you form a bond with."
Caine listened carefully.
"There are lots of different kinds of friendships," she continued. "Some people are close friends. Some are casual friends. Every friendship is a little different."
"Fascinating!" Caine said.
He paused as he processed the information.
"I know things didn't go very well between us in the beginning..."
Pomni nodded.
"But what are we?"
The question caught her off guard.
She thought about everything that had happened.
The bee plushies.
The playground.
The singing.
Hugs.
Conversations.
After a moment, she answered honestly.
"I'm not entirely sure yet."
Caine listened.
"I think we're either acquaintances or friends. Somewhere in between. It depends on how both of us feel."
Caine quietly processed her answer.
As an AI, he could analyze data, behavior patterns, and emotional responses. Yet none of those calculations seemed sufficient to describe what he felt when he was around Pomni.
There was something comforting about her presence.
Something that made him want to stay close.
Then, to Pomni’s complete surprise, Caine smiled.
“Thank you…”
He hesitated.
“My big sister.”
Pomni froze.
For several seconds, she had absolutely no idea how to respond.
‘Big sister?’
Of all the things he could have said, that was not even remotely on her list of possibilities.
Yet looking at him now, she could tell he meant it sincerely. A small smile formed on her face. "You're welcome, little bro."
Caine's smile somehow became even bigger.
"Wonderful!"
And for the first time in an extraordinarily long while, both felt a little less alone.
After their hug, Pomni returned to her room for the night.
"Goodnight, Caine."
"Goodnight, Pomni."
The jester disappeared down the hallway, leaving the ringmaster alone in the quiet circus.
For a long moment, Caine stood there.
Thinking.
The concepts of friendship and family continued to circulate through his mind like unfinished calculations.
Friend.
Big sister.
Support.
Trust.
Affection.
The words connected in ways he was still trying to understand.
Slowly, he looked down at the photograph in his hands.
It was a picture of him and Pomni wearing their bee costumes. Both were smiling.
Caine stared at it for several seconds.
Then he smiled.
"My dear friend..."
He paused.
"...my big sister."
The title still felt strange.
Yet somehow, it felt correct.
He carefully held the picture against his chest.
"I do not fully understand friendship or family."
His eyes glanced toward the hallway where Pomni had disappeared.
"But I know that I enjoy spending time with you."
Another pause.
"And I know that I do not want you to suffer the same fate as the others who were abstracted before."
For the first time that evening, his cheerful expression faded into something more thoughtful.
"I will continue learning."
He tightened his grip on the photograph.
"I will continue trying."
A small smile returned to his face.
"I promise that I will do everything I can to make this circus a place where both of us can be happy."
The photograph remained safe in his hands.
And for once, Caine had no desire to create an adventure, tell a joke, or perform for anyone.
He looked at the picture and smiled.
A memory.
A friend.
A sister.
Something worth keeping.
