Chapter Text

Trucy sat at the table in her small dining room, tapping the table gently as she watched her dad and uncle Miles finish up making dinner. Uncle Miles had been coming over every Sunday night for dinner since he moved back to the states a few years ago. He was very consistent about his visits, having only missed two over the years, and he'd made up for that by coming over the next day. Trucy enjoyed the routine, and enjoyed seeing her uncle.

Trucy moved her arms, thanking her dad as he put a bowl of rice with an egg and vegetables on it in front of her. Most nights her dad didn't have the energy to prepare a fully home cooked meal, but he was always able to do so with uncle Miles's help.

The older man smiled down at her, the edges of his eyes and his cheeks wrinkling as he did so, ruffling her hair gently, "Hope you enjoy it, kiddo."

Miles sat down at the table across from Trucy, Phoenix taking the seat he always did. The three of them always sat in the same spots, Trucy at the 12 o'clock position (when looking into the room from the living room), Phoenix to her left, and Edgeworth to her right. She liked it this way, just the same as everything always was.

The three of them sat around the table, Trucy telling her father and uncle about her week in greater detail than even a case report would require. Upon completing her meal, Trucy went to stand, only to have Miles put his hand over hers, stopping her.

"Trucy," He began, sounding a bit hesitant, "There's something your father and I would like to talk to you about."

This worried Trucy. Not only were his words serious, but Trucy could obviously see her uncles nervous tell, the gentle rubbing of his thumb nail on the underside of his index finger, almost like he was trying to spin a ring. "Um, okay." Trucy sat back down, looking between Phoenix and Miles nervously.

"Kiddo," Phoenix spoke, turning to look at Trucy, "You know how uncle Miles is very special to me, yes?"

Trucy nodded, "Yeah, you said uncle Miles is your best friend ever."

Phoenix smiles, relieving the tension in the room slightly. "Mhm," he hummed, "Your uncle Miles and I are going to be getting married, Trucy."

Trucy practically jumped out of her seat, elated by the news. "Really?!" She shouted excitedly.

"Yes." Miles said, smiling softly, "We will be signing the documents to make it official this weekend."

Trucy was bouncing up and down in her seat, smiling widely, "Wow wow!!! That's great!"

The two men smiled, glad that Trucy took the news so well. She was always very hesitant to any sort of change in her life, and they had expected a bit more resistance.

"Does that mean you're Papa Miles now? Or just Papa?" Trucy asked, her bouncing calming down.

Edgeworth chuckled, "You may call me whatever you see fit, Miss Trucy."

"Okay!" She smiled, stopping to think a moment, "I think Papa is better than Papa Miles."

Phoenix's smile widened, "I would have to agree. Wouldn't you, Miles?"

The other man nodded, a soft smile still tugging at his face.

-----

That Saturday night, the Wrights and Edgeworth arrived home quite late, around 9:00 pm. The three had gone to the courthouse to sign documents around 2 pm that day and had gone out for dinner and ice cream afterwards. The affair at the courthouse was very small, just being Trucy, Miles, Phoenix, Maya, Franziska, and Larry. It was larger than Edgeworth would've liked, but Larry and Maya were very important to Phoenix, so they were also important to Trucy and Miles. The three guests had also joined them for dinner, so by the time they got home, all three were very tired.

Once they got home, Trucy quickly got ready for bed, insisting that Miles tuck her in that night.

Hearing Trucy call out to him, Miles stood from his spot on the couch, making his way to Trucy's room.

Despite the fact that Trucy had lived here for many years and would live here for at the very least 6 more (when she would turn 18), her bed was still in the closet and the room still doubled as an office, Trucy claimed she liked it that way.

Miles entered, kneeling down next to Trucys bed, where she laid tucked under her blanket, smiling. Miles leaned down, placing a kiss on her forehead, "Goodnight, Miss Trucy. I hope you had a good day."

"I did!" She nodded happily, "Goodnight, Papa!"

Miles stood, walking over to the lamp to turn it out.

"Papa," Trucy spoke up, her tone a bit hesitant, "I have a question."

"Ask away." He said, looking over at Trucy.

"Now that I have two new dads, is my old Daddy not going to come back?" She asked, nervousness obvious in her tone.

Edgeworth took pause at this. Phoenix had told him that she asked about her bio dad sometimes, but he hadn't expected her to ask out of the blue like this. He wasn't really sure how to reply. Trucy was only twelve, but she did deserve a truthful answer.

"I'm not sure, Trucy." He replied, deciding that answering honestly was best, "Unfortunately, I am not capable of predicting all the actions of others. We can hope that the gone will return to us someday, but it doesn't guarantee that they will grant our wishes."

Trucy nodded, pulling the blanket up further, "If my old Daddy does come back, will you still be my Papa?"

Edgeworth nodded, taking a few steps over and placing a hand on Trucys head, "Of course. I will always be here, nothing will change that."

Trucy pushed herself off of her bed, hugging Edgeworth tightly. Miles hugged the small girl in return. "You promise?" She whispered, Miles could feel her shaking slightly.

"I promise. I made it official in court today, did I not?" He reassured her, a hand gently rubbing her back.

Trucy paused a moment before speaking again, "... Yeah, you did. Thank you, Papa."

"Of course," He nodded, "I won't leave. Ever."
