Chapter Text
Benson Moretti's days had been the same for the past four years. He would wake up, take care of his personal needs, have breakfast with his siblings, and go to work. At work, he would stand at the front desk for his shift, watch the shooting range, attend to the captain's needs; (in fact, he would force him to, Goddess knew the man was more negligent about taking care of himself than anyone else.) He would secretly exchange a few quick kisses with Dolly, drive the Nighthawks to their destinations in a carriage, and most recently, after a particular incident in which he was almost attacked by a suspect, he was being trained by coach Gwaine to protect himself in unfortunate and accidental situations like this.
The day started out like any other, and Benson, hoping to have another relatively safe and routine day, sat down at the breakfast table with Melissa and Klein. Melissa talked enthusiastically about the classes she was going to take today, and Benson occasionally asked her questions and kept the conversation going.
Shortly after, before Melissa could give another lecture about the appeal of assembling recycled machinery, Benson's attention was drawn to Klein, who had remained silent throughout the conversation and his food had remained mostly untouched. Benson looked at his brother with concern: " Klein, are you okay? You've been very quiet today. "
Melissa's attention was also drawn, and she gave her other brother a sharp look: " Yes, you haven't eaten any of your food, is there a problem? "
Klein smiled weakly and tried to reassure the two of them: " It's nothing, I'm just worried about my new job interview and my stomach is feeling tight, it's nothing that can't be solved with a little herbal medicine. "
Benson nodded: " That's right. Do you want me to pick up some medicine for you today? There's a pharmacy near my work and Klein, you have to remember not to push yourself, right? I have enough money to we live comfortably for a while, you don't have to worry about these things, go out with your friends, have some fun, studying all the time is not good for your health. "
Klein smiled dryly and replied: " I keep it in my mind Benson, thank you. But I'll get the medicine myself, I have to go deliver something to Welch today, I can stop by the pharmacy when I get back. "
Melissa narrowed her eyes and stared at Klein who seemed more and more anxious by the minute. " You mean the creepy notebook someone sold to Welch as an antique? Are you going to give it back? " Benson's attention was caught by this statement: " Antique? Creepy notebook? Why didn't I know about it? " Melissa huffed and patted her chest. " You work late every day, and when you come back you're so tired you fall asleep right after dinner, how were you supposed to know? "
Benson sheepishly rubbed his neck and apologized. Klein looked at both of them and tried to calm the atmosphere in the room. " It's nothing special, really. It's just a notebook belonging to the Antigonus family that accidentally fell into Welch's hands. I was helping Welch translate the texts inside, and now I have to return it. maybe it's because it's so old and smells bad that Melissa feels that way, but it's really not a problem. ″
Benson raised an eyebrow, but accepted his brother's weak response and said nothing more. The rest of the breakfast was spent in silence and then the family prepared to leave the house and begin the day. Benson put on his coat and hat, ready to leave when Klein came down the stairs with a package in his hand, trying to tidy up his puffy hair before leaving.
Benson smiled at his behavior and gave his brother a few soly's before being stopped by a strange feeling that had come over him. " That should be enough to buy some medicine. "
Klein muttered a thank you and left the house, but Benson was still in the hallway, trying to figure out what had caused this strange feeling in him. After a while, when nothing came to mind, he nodded and after saying goodbye to Melissa, went to work. Throughout the day, he moved between different posts and performed different tasks so much that he completely forgot about this morning's incident and his strange mood. Well this is just a logical occurrence.
