Chapter Text

Chuuya didn't jump. He didn't turn around. He just watched Dazai’s reflection in the glass window.

Dazai was walking slow, his left shoulder stiff beneath his loose white shirt. The black suit from the gala was gone, replaced by a pair of Chuuya’s oversized grey sweatpants.

His hair was messy, sticking up in soft curls from sleep, and his right hand was tucked into his pocket.

"The Agency was very loud" Dazai murmured, stepping up until he was standing just a foot behind Chuuya.

"Atsushi-kun looked like he was going to faint, and Kunikida-kun nearly broke his fountain pen in half."

"You told them?" Chuuya said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register.

"I didn't tell them anything," Dazai replied, a small, subtle shift in his reflection showing his smirk. "I simply let them observe the evidence. They are detectives, after all. It’s their job to draw conclusions."

Chuuya finally turned around. He leaned his back against the glass window, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Mori knows you lied about dropping them in the harbor, you know. The harbor is maffia territory. He could have a diving team clear that in three hours if he actually cared."

"Mori won't search," Dazai said softly. He stepped forward, closing that final foot of space, and He loomed over Chuuya. "Mori understands the value of a tether. He knows that as long as that ring is on my finger, I am listening to a specific frequency."

"And what frequency is that?" Chuuya’s voice was barely a whisper. His throat felt incredibly tight. Up close, he could see the faint violet shadows under Dazai’s eyes, the pale line of his jaw, the tiny patch of skin near his throat that wasn't covered by bandages.

He is so fragile, Chuuya’s brain screamed. He is a human being made of glass, and I could crush him with a thought, but he threw himself in front of a bullet for me. so why would i?

Dazai didn't answer with words. Slowly, he reached out his hand The movement was stiff, his muscles groaning from the stitches in his shoulder, but his gaze remained locked on Chuuya’s blue eyes.

He lifted his hand and let his fingers hover just a millimeter away from Chuuya’s cheek.
"Yours," Dazai whispered.

Chuuya didn't lean away. He didn't spark his ability. He reached up with his own left hand, his fingers wrapping around Dazai’s wrist, shifting Dazai’s hand until his bare palm was pressed fully against Chuuya’s cheek.

The phantom of gravity went dead silent. There was only the warmth of Dazai’s skin, the slight roughness of his bandage-wrapped knuckles, and the solid, heavy click of their platinum rings touching as Chuuya held Dazai’s hand against his face.

Dazai’s breath hitched. For a man who claimed to have a calculation for every scenario in human history, his expression in that moment was completely blank, wide eyed and stunned by the sheer, honesty in Chuuya’s gaze.

"Chuuya..." Dazai murmured, his thumb shifting to trace the line of Chuuya’s lower lip.

"Don't say anything stupid," Chuuya warned, his voice shaking just a fraction. He didn't let go of Dazai’s wrist. He squeezed it tighter, anchoring himself to the only person who could truly hold him down. "Just... don't take the ring off."

"I couldn't even if I wanted to," Dazai said.

that made Chuuya’s heart ache with the terrifying, beautiful realization that there was no going back.

Chuuya’s left hand remained around Dazai’s wrist, holding Dazai’s bare, unbandaged palm flush against his cheek.

Dazai’s thumb didn't stop its slow, tracing motion across Chuuya’s lower lip. His touch was incredibly gentle a jarring contrast to the lethal, calculating genius the rest of the world knew.

Dazai was staring at him, his dark brown eyes wide, completely stripped of its usual mocking sparkle.

"Chuuya," Dazai whispered again, his voice cracking slightly under the weight of the silence. "If you hold onto me like this... my calculation breaks entirely."

"Good," Chuuya rasped, his voice dropping into a rough, low growl that did nothing to hide the tremor in his throat. He leaned his head heavier into Dazai’s palm, his blue eyes flashing with a desperate, aggressive honesty. "Your calculations are always trash anyway. They don't account for reality."

"And what is reality?"

"Reality is that you're a fragile, suicidal waste of bandages who had no business taking a bullet for me," Chuuya hissed, his grip tightening on Dazai’s wrist until his knuckles turned white.

"Reality is that I’ve spent seven years trying to figure out how to hate you, Dazai. I’ve spent seven years convincing myself that you’re just a traitor, a ghost from the Mafia, a nuisance I’m forced to deal with."

He paused, a sharp, ragged breath hitching in his chest. The ring on his finger caught the distant harbor lights, casting a tiny silver crescent across Dazai’s wrist.

"But I can't do it anymore," Chuuya whispered, the words tearing out of him like an admission of defeat. "I looked at you on that balcony, bleeding out because you threw yourself in front of a gun, and my entire world went completely black. I didn't care about the mission. I didn't care about Mori. I only cared that you were breathing."

Dazai went completely still. His chest rose and fell in a shallow, uneven breath. For a man who had spent his entire life crafting witty dialogues and elaborate monologues, he had absolutely nothing to say. He looked terrified truly, deeply terrified by the raw weight of Chuuya’s words.

"Chuuya... you shouldn't say things you can't calculate," Dazai murmured, trying to pull his hand back just a fraction of an inch, his old instincts screaming at him to retreat back into the shadows of his mind. "I am a monster. I’ve always been"

"Shut up," Chuuya commanded fiercely. He didn't let Dazai pull away. Instead, he used his grip on Dazai’s wrist to violently yank him forward, closing the final inch of space between them.
Chuuya slammed his lips against Dazai’s.
IIt wasn't a rehearsed, high society theatrical performance like the gala. It was clumsy, intense, and fueled by seven years of unspoken trauma.

Chuuya kissed him with a desperate, burning hunger, his left hand sliding up from Dazai’s wrist to tangle firmly into the messy, brown curls at the back of Dazai's head, pulling him down, demanding that he stay.

Dazai’s brain completely short-circuited. For a split second, his body went rigid under the impact. But then, as Chuuya’s teeth brushed against his lower lip, something inside Dazai snapped.

A low, ragged groan escaped Dazai’s throat. his long fingers wrapping tightly around Chuuya’s waist, pulling Chuuya flush against his chest with an urgency that bordered on violent. He kissed Chuuya back with a fierce, terrifying desperation, his lips parting as he drank in the taste of Chuuya’s wine, Chuuya’s heat, and Chuuya’s absolute reality.

They stumbled backward against the floor to ceiling glass window, the pane groaning slightly under their combined weight. Chuuya didn't care. He let his right hand clawing at the fabric of Dazai’s white shirt, anchoring himself to the only person in the universe who could handle the true mass of his soul.

When they finally broke apart for air, neither of them moved away. Dazai pressed his forehead firmly against Chuuya’s, his breath coming in hot, ragged gasps. His hand was still clutched tightly around Chuuya’s waist, his fingers trembling against the velvet fabric.
"I am in love with you," Chuuya whispered into the space between their lips, his blue eyes fierce, refusing to look away, refusing to let the moment slip back into denial. "I'm in love with you, you miserable bastard. And I'm not taking the ring off."

Dazai closed his eyes, a small, breathless laugh escaping him a sound that was entirely genuine,

He tilted his head slightly, his lips brushing against Chuuya’s jawline, before he buried his face into the crook of Chuuya’s neck, breathing in the scent of his expensive shampoo and the faint metallic tang of the harbor.

"You really are a fool, Chuuya," Dazai whispered, his voice vibrating deeply against Chuuya’s skin as his grip on Chuuya’s waist tightened, holding him like a lifeline. "You could have had anyone in this city. You could have had a normal, peaceful life away from the chaos."

"I don't want a normal life," Chuuya muttered, his left hand shifting to rest against the back of Dazai’s neck, his fingers gently tracing the soft hairs there. "I want you."

Dazai pulled back just enough to look Chuuya in the eye. He lifted his left hand the ring gleaming brilliantly under the penthouse lights and gently pressed it against Chuuya’s left hand, their matching rings clicking together with a solid, definitive sound.

"Then you have me," Dazai whispered, his brown eye softening with a warmth Chuuya had never seen before.

Chuuya smirked, the familiar, cocky light finally returning to his blue eyes as he pulled Dazai down for another, much slower kiss. "Good. Now go make me some tea, husband."

"As my executive commands," Dazai laughed, and for the first time in seven years, the gravity between them felt completely weightless.
