Chapter Text
“don’t be nervous, they’ll love you.” jiyong squeezed seunghyun’s wrist.
“will they?” seunghyun grimaced. “i need them to. it’s very important.”
“youngbae likes you. there’s no way the others won’t.”
seunghyun opened his mouth to argue more, but jiyong quickly kissed him. he knew that was seunghyun’s off button. he abused that power more than a few times when he got seunghyun frustrated but wanted to distract him.
suddenly, as expected, seunghyun was fine. he grinned wide when they broke apart.
“awesome.” he giggled.
“oh, shut up!” jiyong laughed, pushing his face away. “you don’t have to say that every time we kiss.”
“but it’s awesome every time. all…” seunghyun looked up, thinking, before he sighed. “i was gonna give a number of times but i’ve decided that joke isn’t funny anymore.”
“good thinking.” jiyong pat his arm. “now we’re gonna be late, let’s go!”
they were meeting up with jiyong’s friends to watch the huge yearly fireworks show. they always set up at the top of the tallest hill and had food and drinks together. this year, however, they gained a participant. seunghyun had never gone to the fireworks show and jiyong was determined to make this the best experience seunghyun had ever had.
“woah, i think the entire city is here.” seunghyun fawned as jiyong dragged him through the crowd.
“yes, dear. you were weird for never coming to this.” jiyong teased. “everybody comes to the show.”
“i see that now.” seunghyun took everything in with wide eyes.
jiyong pointed out his friends at the top of the hill and he felt seunghyun’s grip on his hand tighten. what gave him butterflies the most was that seunghyun wasn’t necessarily worried that his friends wouldn’t like him, he was worried that he would disappoint jiyong by not being good enough to integrate himself into his life.
they finally reached the group and everyone hugged jiyong. when he stepped back after the last person, he motioned to seunghyun and introduced him. he watched seunghyun’s face as they each hugged him and introduced themselves. he was in awe.
daesung took a quick liking to seunghyun, talking his ear off about everything he would experience during his first fireworks show. jiyong couldn’t help but smile at how invested and responsive seunghyun was. like he had known daesung longer than one whole minute.
“two words, ji. wow.” chaerin whistled, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“that was one.” jiyong laughed, holding his finger up.
“repeat it in your head. now it’s two. but back to that man… wow. good job.”
“i actually won him over while being bad at my job.”
“that’s still the cutest story i’ve ever heard. i can’t wait for your babies to hear how their dads met.”
“babies? holy shit!” jiyong’s eyes widened. “we’ve been official for three months.”
“and you met him four months ago. you’ve gotta plan ahead.”
“chae, i love you, but shh.”
she pinched his cheek and walked off for a beer. jiyong turned his attention back to seunghyun and he was alone, already looking at him. jiyong waved him over and seunghyun didn’t fight it.
“how long have you been staring at me?” jiyong smiled, wrapping his arms around seunghyun’s waist.
“since the day i met you.” seunghyun turned his voice airy, fluttering his eyelashes.
“i’m dumping you.” jiyong groaned, dropping his forehead against seunghyun’s chest.
“yeah? you’ll miss me too much.” seunghyun wrapped him up tight in his arms.
“whatever.” jiyong giggled, lifting his head to steal a kiss.
everyone slowly settled on blankets they had brought and the show was starting very soon. jiyong was sat between seunghyun’s legs, his back to his front. they passed a wine bottle back and forth as they took in their surroundings.
it was beautiful and the fireworks hadn’t even started. couples, families, people who came solo were everywhere. smiles graced faces and arms embraced bodies. everyone was all coming together for one beautiful experience and it was moving.
“are you crying?” seunghyun slowly sat up so he could lean forward and look jiyong in the face.
“yeah.” jiyong sniffed, meeting seunghyun’s eyes. “this stupid wine is making me sappy.”
seunghyun gently kissed his cheek. “thinking about how beautiful it is here?”
“yes. look at you reading me like a book.”
“that’s my job as your boyfriend. plus, it helps that i’m feeling it, too.”
jiyong smiled, pressing his lips to seunghyun’s again. he loved when it felt like just the two of them. all the noise, all the other people, yet it was just him and seunghyun in their own world.
they jumped at the first firework. it caught them way off guard. they laughed together before turning to watch the show. it was breathtaking. if the people weren’t making jiyong emotional before, the fireworks sure did the job.
his heart felt so full. the bright colors, accompanying music, and seunghyun’s arms around him had him steadily crying the whole show. if the slight shake and occasional sniffing from behind him told him anything, seunghyun was feeling it all the same.
seunghyun held him tight against him like he was a teddy bear. jiyong wrapped his fingers around seunghyun’s arms, helping hold himself close.
as the show slowed and the music got calmer and sweeter, seunghyun whispered in jiyong’s ear. “i’m so glad i met you, ji. i think about how lucky i am every day.”
“i’m so glad i fumbled so hard that you came back to me.” jiyong hummed, turning to look at him. “and that you got the wrong noodles.”
seunghyun pouted. “hey, it was a serious situation. i needed those new noodles. mama seunghyun was mad at me.”
“so serious that you made fun of me the whole time?” jiyong grinned so hard his cheeks hurt.
“absolutely.” seunghyun nodded along.
they looked at each other, just smiling and taking in each other’s presence. an extra large firework went off and they both looked over to see it had exploded in the shape of a heart.
“well, would you look at that.” seunghyun chuckled. “must be for us.”
“must be.” jiyong agreed.
seunghyun cupped jiyong’s jaw, pulling him into a kiss. jiyong let himself completely melt into it. he thought he was going to give seunghyun the best night ever, but it seemed seunghyun had the same goal for him. they reluctantly pulled apart and watched the last fireworks together.
jiyong was disappointed that it was over. not because he missed some of the fireworks, but because it meant him and seunghyun had to go their opposite ways for the night. as they helped pack up, soohyuk walked over and silently handed two polaroids.
it was their kiss before the final fireworks. each polaroid was slightly different, but captured the same moment beautifully. jiyong didn’t even know the pictures were taken. he looked up to thank soohyuk, but he was already off folding up his blanket.
“wow.” seunghyun looked at the polaroids. “that’s a beautiful couple.”
“absolutely.” jiyong handed over one of the polaroids.
seunghyun immediately added his to his wallet. jiyong put his in the back of his clear phone case.
“you made tonight perfect, ji. thank you.” seunghyun ran his fingers through jiyong’s hair.
“of course. you made mine more perfect than i could have ever imagined. thank you.”
seunghyun smiled, kissing his nose. “let me walk you home?”
“please.” jiyong immediately took his hand.
he was strongly considering locking seunghyun up and never letting him go. he was the most perfect, wonderful boyfriend ever and jiyong was not going to lose that. ever.
the entire way home, jiyong thanked the universe for seunghyun buying the wrong noodles and for himself sucking at his new job.
