“Do I?” He draws closer. From how she’s seated, it’s almost more like a slide— something fluid and slithering like a serpent. Something in her expects fangs and venom when he opens his mouth, but all she gets is his words. “I’m not sure if I do. I might need you to look closer.”

Emmrich, walking behind Rook and still striding ahead, bumped right into him and almost dropped his basket. But before he could question the sudden stop, Rook whirled around on his heels, his eyes wide with panic.
“Nope, Andraste’s holy cunt, absolutely not,” he muttered as he quickly pulled Emmrich with him into a narrow side-street and started to lead them away from the plaza.

A timelapse of a supermarket clerk's obsession as it develops over seven months, from what he thinks is love at first sight to what is definitely the death knell to his life. All of this over a woman twice his age who's already dating another woman and isn't even into men, no less.
Intended to be a deconstruction of the plot structure of a dark romance's prologue, mocking the way the plot is set up in either the prologue (if the book has one) or the first few chapters until the male lead's establishment in the story. It's less comedic than my other 1000-word satirical short stories before it as a result.

As many times as Jack hits this wall with him, where he expects a shove or at least the withdrawing of affection, it doesn't happen. Dennis is endless in this way, his all encompassing love almost painfully kind and unwavering.
