Each desperate to keep the other in his life, both men hatch a plan to create the perfect scenario to help put their friend on the path needed to keep their lives intertwined. For James, that means helping Sherlock feel that same euphoria upon taking another mans life, and for Sherlock that means keeping James distracted enough that he doesn't devolve into destruction to keep his electric, ever ravenous mind entertained.
Whatever it takes, the two will stay together, even if it means the destruction of something fundamental to them both.
