“It’ll go?” he asks.
“Sure,” says the geezer with the earrings. “It’s top line. Goes like gravy.”

Happiness is only temporary...or at least, that seems to always be the asterisk attached to every aspect of Cloud Strife's life. After a year of peace and rebuilding with Tifa at the bar, the slow yet tempting flood of contentment leaves Cloud completely vulnerable when a couple stricken with grief swears to make him and Tifa pay for the destruction of Midgar. Though he hates to go back down that dark path, Cloud begins to wonder if he truly deserves anything at all. -

Tifa is on the outside, fighting her hardest to pull him back out.

Tifa could not help the groan when her alarm sounded. And waking up so early was her idea. Joints took some effort to get moving and not feel so stiff. Deep fog in her brain; some coffee would help. She stretched with care and slipped out of bed, padding to the bathroom in her slippers. The sky outside was blue, the sun peeking over the horizon. Perfect timing.
Daily routines played out like so many times before. Washing, brushing her teeth. Down to the kitchen, one hand sliding along the banister rail with each step down. A pause at the bottom, frustration at the effects of time on her. A deep breath. Better. She felt better. Not so old anyway. “I feel fine.”
An older Tifa struggles from bed to meet with Cloud.

Rufus dispatching them to Nibelheim for the last dregs of Jenova should have been a fool’s errand. But in amongst the inert Mako reactor machinery were traces of cells. Something the newly awakened Remnants were decidedly interested in.

Four years after Meteorfall, Rufus Shinra seemed to feel he had more or less successfully glossed over a lot of problematic decisions by his company. Shinra was still nowhere close to its old potential, held in check firmly by the presence of the more popular WRO. Few did not see the next announcement from Shinra as anything more than a naked PR move. Culture was coming back to the world – and Shinra wanted to held it arrive. There was a swiftly ignored press release about some new creative director the company had hired, but the first production was impossible to dismiss so easily. Loveless was being re-staged.
Shinra's new creative director is on a mission to keep on bringing back Loveless until it consumes the whole of pop-culture; Reno is not taking this lying down.

This is a complete re-working of my 12+ year-old fanfic of the same name. I'm using the same gist, but it's otherwise different and improved. Aerith and Zack agree to adopt the remnants, but only if they find a way to be completely themselves and remove Jenova and Sephiroth from their identities. She sends them to live with Cloud, Tifa, and the orphans, where they must learn to be decent denizens of Edge and find a way to fulfill their new mission in a chaotic post-Meteor world that hates them.

Weather in Edge took time to stabilise. The Planet was bouncing back, the vampiric leeching of Mako from within halted. But could it recover fast enough? Had too much expended both in Mako power generation and with the rallying of the Planet’s own power to eradicate Meteor? No one was certain. In the immediate aftermath, the desert region surrounding Midgar – and the new city of Edge – remained dry.
The rain in Edge gets worse.

Fresh produce fluctuated in prices as the Planet left the Mako age and moved into a new era. No term to encompass it yet – other than in relation to the events and practices no longer current. Post-Midgar. Post-Mako. Post-Meteor. Post-Shinra (more or less anyway). Post-Sephiroth. To Avalanche and a few significant people; post-Aeris. Fresh vegetables commanded a premium in the fall of Midgar and the rise of Edge. Crops from the Upper Plate and in storage sold at absurd mark-ups to those desperate enough to buy.
Fruit and vegetables are getting more expensive post-Meteor.

Or perhaps not gone; perhaps she could simply no longer sense it. Silence. No, not silence. The distant sound of wind through the shattered remains of Midgar. The distant drips of burst pipes and falling water. Faint stirrings of scavengers – both human and inhuman – out in the surrounding sectors. But so little in her head.
Without warning, Aeris can no longer hear the Planet.

Cloud glanced at her and swallowed, but remained silent. If he took any longer then she would need to leave him behind. "I'll come," he said in a quiet voice. "If you're okay with me being there, I'll come." Tifa smiled.

Tifa had been considering the project for the last month or so. Additional chalkboards were easy to obtain, but finding the time to get started was much trickier. In the end the opportunity came on the spur of the moment; a quieter than usual afternoon in the Seventh Heaven. No customers and no restocks to worry about. The weather was likely a factor since the heavy rain kept Marlene and Denzel inside and their regular customers elsewhere. Tifa seized the opportunity to turn her idea into a family activity. A shame Cloud wasn't here too. She could wait, but- "Okay kids. We're going to re-write the menus."
"Re-write?" Marlene stared at her aghast. "You're changing the food?"
Tifa smiled and shook her head. "Not like that." Marlene relaxed. "I thought we could write them out again in different languages."
Tifa decides to rewrite the Seventh Heaven menus.
