Aziraphale chooses to follow Metatron onto the elevator, a good coffee in his hand, as if everything was better when he did it. Months, perhaps another eternity, had passed since “I forgive you.” Crowley hated forgiveness. What was the point when he could drink coffee, set fire to trash cans, and drive a Bentley like a madman?
Coffee, especially Nina's coffee shop "Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death" had become Crowley's new apartment. Coffee grounds that seemed to speak, screams against the sky and days spent staring at the sea until, suddenly, Aziraphale returns. Strange, in the way he smiled, in the way he asked Crowley questions, or in never answering when he asked why he could no longer enter the library. The couriers arrive, bearing what remains of a pardon, and Aziraphale smiles.
Crowley has too many questions, and Aziraphale is obsessed with his wings. Aziraphale observes them, has them describe them, then disappears without explanation, leaving Crowley alone with the doubt.
Aziraphale has been forgiven, but that forgiveness has the flavor of silences, fragile smiles, and unspoken truths. He knows what he did.
