Upstairs, Louis is sitting in the living room with an impressive assortment of luggage ready to go. He rises when Rashid and Sam approach from the elevator, raising his eyebrows expectantly, holding out what Rashid recognizes as the memory stick he’d given to Daniel.
“This was the only thing left sitting in Daniel’s room,” Louis says before Rashid can speak. “Nothing else is there. Care to explain?”
“We couldn’t find either of ’em in the city,” Sam replies. “Let me guess—you discovered that maître packed up without a trace, too?”
“That’s right,” Louis says, a cool challenge, tossing the memory stick onto the coffee table. “Were you ever going to clue me in?”
“We had hoped that Daniel would do the job for us,” Rashid admits ruefully. “And he did, at least in part, regarding San Francisco.”
“You just didn’t count on the part where he’d relapse,” Louis counters scornfully. “You should have. It’s what addicts do, Rashid.”
