Summary
Dipper Pines expects the summer to be like any other, exploring the forest and dealing with his family who clearly prefer his twin. The summer takes a turn for the dark when eldritch and demonic things start happening to Dipper. He's sure it's none other than the maniacal triangle and his worst enemy, Bill Cipher, recently escaped from his stone prison. Soon hatred shifts into something more as Bill helps him grasp the darkness spreading within him. But as his detest of his family grows as well as the craving for chaos, Dipper has to make the decision, remain in his human life or let the magic wash over him and lose control.

When Stanford Pines' sacrifice destroyed Bill Cipher and forced him to call on the Axolotl, even his purely chaotic mind couldn't fathom what would happen next.
The Axolotl just said that he'd need to "absolve his crime" and take "a different form".
Why this involved him becoming a dumb magical bird with an even dumber power was beyond him.
But the real punishment came clear soon enough: along with being in an animal form, he now had to watch over the Pines twins of a different timeline.

Bill exhaled slowly through his nose, gaze fixed ahead, watching the road stretch out in front of him like it always did, before he entered. Maybe he’d see Ford next Tuesday if his schedule was free. Or tomorrow. Or in a month.
Man, he doesn’t know! This is like reading the House of Leaves. And the word house isn’t in blue, it’s in red! You don’t expect it. As to further quote the House of Leaves,

Even now, at sixteen, Dipper still looks back on his second summer, two years ago, fondly. His first summer in Gravity Falls was by far the worst one, Bill wasn’t great to deal with, and even now he haunts Dipper’s mind and plagues him with nightmares. His third summer, he was doing summer college courses online, so he was too busy to actually enjoy it. But that second summer was when so much of his life changed, that whole year was just crazy.
