Impian sederhana itu pasti mudah diraih seandainya Gempa tidak terlahir sebagai anak tengah dari 5 saudara penerus PT Pandawa, perusahaan senjata pemasok terbesar alutsista TNI, dipaksa jadi informal leader di usia 20 setelah ayah mereka, Hang Kasa, meninggal mendadak, dan dilanda dilema untuk bertahan di perusahaan keluarganya atau membelot ke perusahaan Pakdhe Taka, PT Cahaya Rimba Semesta, yang bergerak di industri obat-obatan, hanya karena dia memilih jurusan keperawatan untuk kuliah.
Cerita ini dibuka dengan pertanyaan, "Mas Gempa, sudah punya pacar?" seiring sarapan pagi menjelang upacara kemerdekaan dengan menu telur dadar keasinan. Gempa kelelahan sehabis tirakatan, bukan karena kebelet kawin seperti yang diledek adiknya.
Di masa endemi, 26 tahun pascareformasi, pada tahun penting pesta demokrasi negara yang telah 79 tahun merdeka, Gempa Mahitala Arjuna yang calon Ners itu tidak bisa hidup lurus-lurus saja ketika apa yang selama ini dianggapnya sebagai kebenaran tak ada lagi yang benar.
