Summary
In the sun-scorched hills before Solymer, the holiest city in Kedraya, King Rydric Aldren’s crusading host is dying by inches. I gulp and hesitantly blurt out, "Slinger?"
"Yeah?" Ironslinger responds, a slight smile showing his curiosity to what I was soon to ask.
"Are you afraid..?" I say, pausing and unwilling to look Ironslinger in the eyes, "Of y'know, what’s gonna happen to you and yer farm..?"
Ironslinger chuckles before coming to a stop, his frame settling with a heavy, metallic creak. But as he looks over, the sound dies out. He realizes my question isn't a joke. I fidget with my untouched cup, the Engex inside vibrating with the slight tremor in my servos. I wish I hadn't been so stupid to ask that.
The question and his reply echo millions of times over in my head, drowning out the ambience of crickets singing. Ironslinger opens up his mouth before cutting himself off. I hear him reaching toward my shoulder then freezing.
From the porch, the screen door bangs open. Ronnie is holding a stack of legal papers and a "Sold" sign.
"Seize!" He calls out, his voice sounding small against the vastness of the fields and distance. "The House already got sold. We get to leave tomorrow morning."
My drink plunges into the lake, spewing Engex from the now sinking cup.
