Fulfilling his grandpa's wishes for him to spend some time in Japan, James takes his university's opportunity to spend his sophomore year in a partner school in Tokyo. There, he finds a loner in a few of his classes who he is determined to make at least one friend for. Even if he's weirdly annoying and persistent on 'not needing friends'.

All his life Keith had been told how lucky he was to have survived. He’d been told what a miracle it was and how he should thank his lucky stars. However Keith knew he didn’t survive. He remembers the smoke filling his lungs and stinging his eyes. He remembers the fire burning his arms and legs. He remembers screaming and crying even as the fire filled his room. He remembers his heart stopping and he remembers standing beside but not in his own burnt and broken body as the flames slowly died.

Keith didn’t say anything, didn’t have to. His eyes spoke volumes, softening with disbelief as his brow knitted into a tight, worried line. His lips settled into a firm, almost grim, frown, because he wasn't convinced, not one bit. He knew Lance, and this… this wasn't him. Not even close.

“You’re not an angel,” he slurred. The not-angel let out a huff of laughter.
“Yeah, no. Can you move? Why are you even in the middle of the desert?” This not-angel was rather pushy, Lance decided. He needed to learn his manners. Would it kill him to say ‘please?’
“Go ‘way,” he mumbled petulantly.
“C’mon, I can’t leave you half-dead on the side of the road,” the not-angel pleaded, a hint of frustration slipping into his voice. "Work with me here.”
Lance squinted at him. Slowly, his night vision improved, and the outline of his savior began to take shape.

It's been a year and a half since Lance and Keith broke up, and eight months since Keith moved in with his new fiance, Lotor.
Lance had only met Lotor a few times, but every time he couldn't shake the feeling that he was bad news. He'd mentioned it to Keith, but Keith had just shrugged him off, blaming the fact that they were exes, and suggesting they don't talk for a while, maybe a month or so.
Then a month turned into two. Two months turned into five. And now Lance hasn't heard from or seen Keith in eight months. Which, fine, Lance could live with that, but none of the others had heard from him in maybe six months.
That was until Keith showed up at his doorstep, looking like he'd been through hell.
