Summary
After Shiro's disappearance, the paladins struggle to go on and continue fighting against the Galra Empire, they switch lions with Keith as their leader and try to be whole again, but nobody knows exactly where to go from there, how to search for their lost friend, and each of them deals with the loss in their own way.
Meanwhile, Lance battles his insecurities and loneliness and tries to find what he contributes to the team, wishing to have something that made him special like his teammates. But on a rescue mission to a barren planet, they find someone they didn't expect, and when a fight ensues, Lance gets more than he bargained for when he gains something that settles a new path in front of him.
Maybe he should have been more careful with what he wished for.
"This is the thirteenth time already, I can't keep doing this, I'm going mad, I can't stop it, I can't save you!" Lance cried, full out sobbing in the darkness of his room, it was hopeless, he was stuck and nobody could help him, no matter what he did, it was always the same, and he knew he was slowly spiraling into insanity, and the worst part? He couldn't tell anyone, even if he wanted to, he'd tried, he'd nearly choked, he never felt so alone.

It's hard to parse the emotion in Lance's words over the noise, but they do get a response. “Hey, Coran. What's the ‘sitch?”
“Well! The, uhm, ‘sitch’, is a forest fire, likely caused by Zarkon and his forces. It's located southbound a league or two from the castle. It would be in our best interest for you to retrieve your Lion in case there's anything worse planned.”
Lance is quiet for almost uncomfortably long. Keith steps in, his patience thinner than he'd prefer, though with their recent loss he's bound to be jumpier than usual. “Lance? Can you hear us?”
“Yeah, I heard ya. Be there stat.” The communication abruptly ends, leaving the control room in silence.
“Did he just hang up on us!?” Pidge asks, incredulously.

Captured by the Galra, Keith is given two choices- either lose himself to Haggar's experimentation, or take what might be his only chance at freedom- joining the Galra prince, Lotor. While he might not trust the prince, he'd rather take his chances with him than the witch- even if that means publicly betraying Voltron. It's not like he can go back anyways, after what Haggar did to him.
At least this way, he can keep a close eye on the Galra Prince- or at least, that's the plan. Actually carrying it out proves to be far more difficult than he could have expected, leading him to realize that the real threat might never have been Zarkon.

because of this, keith and sven didn't really have a healthy past relationship. and it plays into the dynamic and lack of solid good portrayal of bdsm. this is meant to be shown as a dysfunctional and hint of abusive leaning tendencies between the two of them. when he was in a relationship with him, it was more about keith getting what he wanted, be damned what his partner wanted. which leads to abuse. in his relationship with lance what keith wants, aligns with what lance wants, because he wants lance to be happy, safe and protected, while enjoying him. so it's less abusive more possessive but allows keith to follow safer sexual practices.
