Keith Kogane is hot-headed, rebellious and dangerous. He flies by the seat of his pants with no regard for his safety, or the safety of his fellow cadets. He struggles to conform to the strict culture of the Garrison Flight Academy, with a reputation to his name for being a completely insatiable thrillseeker, an adrenaline junkie. Not only does he not follow the rules of flying, but he's outspoken and snappy. He bites, and he's not afraid to go fist to fist to put people in their place.
Lance McClain is everything that Keith isn't. He's the academy's "Golden Boy". He's annoyingly charming, popular and obedient. He gets to where he wants to be in the academy by playing by the rules, showing up and doing the work. However, Keith's ability to sail through each training session through the use of dangerous and careless maneuvers never fails to piss Lance off.
It doesn't help the situation that Keith finds Lance impossibly attractive, but who is Lance when he's not performing for a crowd? Keith begins aching to claw past Lance's facade and see him for who he really is.
Klance Top Gun themed au because this has been rotting in my brain for like a YEAR. Expect Top Gun references.

Perhaps we should have considered there might have been a reason no one ever answered back.

Shiro didn't make good on his promise to never give up on Keith, Instead just as most of the other adults in Keith's life he failed him not knowing it would lead to a series of disastrous outcomes
OR
Shiro abandoned Keith early on causing him to be booted from there Garrison. Shiro lives regretting this decision and when the Galran Empire captures him and his team on Kerberos they use this to their advantage and find Keith to make him the ultimate warrior to fight Shiro who they now call 'The Champion.' Haggar and Zarkon however don't know that the little game they've made could be the end or new beginning of their empire.
They've created the Star Killer, and soon no one will know what to do with him.
