"I am offering a choice, Prince Maekar," the maester stammered, pulling a Valyrian steel scalpel out of his satchel.
The blade caught the flickering orange candlelight, wickedly sharp. "A horrific choice. We can wait for him to wake. But, it is a fatal gamble. If the fire returns, he will die screaming."
The maester slowly lowered the scalpel, pointing the blade toward the lower half of Aerion's spine.
"Or… I take my blade, and I intentionally sever the spinal cord entirely. I cut the nerves dead."
Aerion receives the blow of the mace, and Maekar has to choose between killing the body or killing the spirit. Whatever the outcome is, Dunk is charged to mend the broken dragon. Inspired by Me Before You.
