Sam shoved his hands in his pockets, and turned to leave, but before he could take a step, Kent caught him in a hug. For a moment, they didn't say anything - Kent just stroked his fingers through Sam's hair like he used to do when he was Kendra's age and came to him with a skinned knee, or a bad dream, or when kids made fun of him in school - but eventually Sam pulled away, swiping at his cheeks to wipe away his tears. "Thanks Dad," he mumbled. "I'll see you later."
Kent sighed as he watched Sam walk away, wishing that he could find the words to tell his son that everything would be okay, but he knew that Sam wouldn't believe him. Even if it was true.
