A year and some change after college graduation, Mike Wheeler is living in his parents' basement.
It isn't as pathetic as it sounds - he's also got a publishing deal, and he's putting the finishing touches on his debut novel.
It's even more pathetic than it sounds - he's got nobody left to hang out with in Hawkins except his ex-girlfriend and his sister's ex-boyfriend, and his best friend isn't returning his calls. The Wheeler house is a pressure cooker and he’s newly terrified that he might be identifiably bisexual. He's totally not spiraling. Everything's hunky dory.
Really, it's ideal timing. Will's due in Hawkins for Thanksgiving any day now, possibly with his beloved sack of hair gel, the ur-yuppie, Country Club Carlton. Mike definitely still knows how to exist in a room with him.
OR:
Mike goes through a late bi awakening, crashes out, comes out, grapples with Catholic guilt, and pines over a Will Byers who might no longer have a place in his life for him - not necessarily in that order.

The older boy shifted in the hug, no longer clinging, but letting himself enjoy it. He looked at Jayce, eyes still wet and shining, and Jayce couldn’t help brushing away the last tear that slipped down Viktor’s cheek.
From his eyes, Jayce’s gaze drifted to Viktor’s lips. He shouldn’t — this wasn’t the moment for that. But when he forced himself to look back up, he realized Viktor was staring at his lips too. A quiet, mutual confession.

The tadpoled adventurers find themselves journeying through the shadow-cursed lands, many of them with dark moods to match. Tav, depressed after cutting off her budding relationship with Gale, feels pulled toward the shadows, wondering if she might be cursed herself. Meanwhile, Gale's mood since Elminster's visit has spiked and plummeted from moment to moment. Absolute despair about his fate — that he will never see his home again, will never again have coffee with his mother, or stay up reading with Tara. And Tav. But the hurt that comes with that is a different beast than the others. All of this to reasonably be morose over, and yet sometimes the innate animal of his body supersedes it, thrilled and virile at moving without pain, sleeping deeply, and casting with his full concentration. If only it didn't need to be so short lived.
THE SECOND ACT is the next part of my SEMI-canonical retelling. The vibe is story-driven, angsty, trauma-healing, pattern-breaking, lots of banter, ~eventual~ romantic smut, but, I promise, NOT what I would consider a slow-burn at this point, healthy doses of comedy & plenty of attention paid to non-romance focused characters, because I love a tender, intimate, platonic friendship.
