The winter that Jackie Taylor stopped talking was an especially frigid ordeal. It had arrived in early October with a fury of flurries that quickly transformed, without warning, into a barrage of blinding snowbursts. By early December, blizzards blanketed the town’s tired streets with boundless layers of snow above ice above snow (and repeat). When Jackie stopped talking in early March, the spring thaw had only barely announced itself. As piles of compacted ice and snow just barely shed their layers, it seemed to some as if nothing was changing at all.
Unlike the winter’s subtle entrance, Jackie’s mutism appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Almost nothing comes out of nowhere.
Nobody knows the exact moment when Jackie stopped talking - whether her voice faded silently into the night or if it was suddenly stolen from her; that's between Jackie and God Himself.
Or: Jackie Taylor has suddenly stopped speaking, and even Shauna can't figure out why. It takes a night of shenanigans with Lottie and Nat and an unnecessary number of calls to Shauna for them to finally crack Jackie Taylor wide open.

Gene Belcher was a weird kid by all accounts. And he was happy with that. He was loud, and messy, and creative, and always did the thing that brought the most joy into the room. He liked bright colours, and fun sounds, and gross jokes, and he liked the people who would laugh along with him. Most of the time, he could be the only one laughing and still be having a good time.
All of that stuff, that quintesentially /Gene/ stuff, was normal for any kid. Kids like bright colours, and glitter, and dressing up, singing and dancing. But eventually, he stopped being so much of a kid. That didn't stop him from feeling like one, but apparently he was becoming that dreaded thing that his older sister Tina was: a teenager.

Gene discovers that people react differently when he doesn't act like a "typical" boy, now that he's older. He discovers double standards, the perils of the gender binary, and new feeling about himself as he grows up.

When Kyo finishes lighting his cigarette, he takes a long drag and allows the smoke to plume out of his mouth and into the dim night air. It hangs between them like an unspoken invitation. Still, Yuchi is rooted to the pavement, helpless, as that intense gaze turns on him again—behind it is the same heat that he had felt while Kyo had watched him on the dancefloor. It makes him wonder what it would be like for Kyo to watch him do other things, too. The thought makes a pretty pink blush rise to the skin of his cheeks, creeping up his neck from his chest.
A slow, knowing smile pulls at the corner of Kyo's lips as he takes another drag of his cigarette.
"Do you want to come home with me, Yuchi?" he asks, smoke creeping out from between his lips as he speaks.
