When Robby starts his rotation at the ED he thinks he knows what to expect. At M.S. 4, the last rotation he needs is emergency medicine, but having done his last one in the ICU he figures he’s bringing in good experience. Some would call that cocky. Bratty, even. Robby argues that it’s not cockiness he’s packing, but intelligence. Core knowledge on the internal workings of medicine. His evaluations clearly reflect that, so if he has a bit of an ego he argues it’s well deserved.
Robby brings this attitude with him on his first day at PTMC. He’s in nice scrubs, comfy shoes he’s broken in, and has his notepad ready for any questions. He holds himself with an air of confidence because he knows he’s able to handle this.
That quickly proves to be wishful thinking.

present day, dennis is finally starting to hit his stride at his rotation at the pitt. he's thriving in his final year in med school and forming close relationships with his co-workers and new roommate, proving to himself and to his superiors that he's got game. and then he's diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. he's entirely unwilling to let the illness stop him from achieving all that he's worked towards, and continues to work for receiving grievous treatment, for better or for worse.
twenty years ago, robby started his position as an attending physician at the ptmc emergency department fresh out of residency in new orleans. he meets jack, an overzealous med student navigating life after being discharged from the army. they're close, too close. the director of the ED and robby's mentor, adamson, isn't fond of the affect jack has on his star physician, and worries about the toll it takes on robby's mental state when eventually jack marries a ptmc regular, juliana.
when dennis has no one else to rely on when treatment doesn't go smoothly, jack and robby are forced to confront their shared past to come together and care for him.

Emery finally looks at her, an scrutinizing look, giving nothing away about how she feels about what she sees. Samira meets the look evenly, standing straight, resisting the urge to make herself smaller and keeping her expression neutral. She refuses to look away first. For a brief, suspended moment, the room seems to narrow to the space between them—the quiet challenge of two people measuring one another without a word.
Emery breaks eye contact first, turning to Shamsi. “What happens when Heather comes back? Will I still be stuck with her?” emphasizing her with a jab in Samira’s direction.
Samira Mohan has worked at Ferrari for years without ever having to work with Emery Walsh. When she's forced into a position of being Emery's trainer their mutual dislike can't overshadow the attraction to each other.
