The life native to the planet is inedible, the heavy metal content of everything makes everything very complicated, the perpetual darkness blocking out the visible light of the nearby star makes everything very complicated, and the random kaiju created by the mutagenic void energies coming from certain spots on the planet make everything very... you get the idea.
Oh, and every year the chance that they'll finally make first contact with one of the many space-faring polities in that galaxy that they've been listening to increases.

A deep space probe launched by the Batarian Hegemony centuries ago transmits a simple signal via quantum entanglement. All Clear. No Stellar Civiliziation Detected. Viable Relay. Two weeks have passed, and the admiral in charge of the security fleet has received confirmation that the observation delegation is coming. He decides to enjoy himself while he waits, and throws a banquet for his crew. The admiral is proposing a toast to the fine future of the Hegemony when, abruptly, the relay activates.
It is the year 700 After Earth by Vector reckoning.
The most well-informed and paranoid of people take action, in secret. They send out living ships to secure the object, and quickly identify what it is: an alien deep space probe. The technology runs on a combination of familiar and unfamiliar principles, with recognizable programming in unrecognizable code. The thing's engines are centered around an odd glowing blue substance that isn't like anything they've seen in Sol. It's the sign of an unfamiliar civilization. The investigators decide to take it back to examine. Two weeks later, Charon explodes.

It's a perfect morning to go make a shit load of new virgin tracks in the snow. Gathering his emergency backpack, he dresses warmly and walks out to his side-by-side. Starting the machine, he lets it warm up a few minutes before zooming down the snow-covered road. A few miles along, he turns off the main road and heads deeper into the mountains when he spies an unusual trackway in the snow. He's seen these tracks before... just not in winter. A tumbling tumbleweed has joined him this morning to enjoy the freshly fallen snow.
