Ryland Grace wakes up on the Hail Mary, with no memory of who he is. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, he soon gets a message from someone named Eva Stratt, a woman who claims to know both his past and his future, thanks to reading a mysterious book called Project Hail Mary that she received in an email.
As the mission continues, two things become clear. Stratt knows what’s going to happen to Grace, but she also lies.

I feel gravity come back to me, but the straps in the chair keep me steady. I hear something crash in the lab below me, and then another—clearly, there are a few things I failed to prepare for descent towards Earth properly. My stomach drops—not because of the change in gravity, you get used to it after a few years in space and foreign planets—but the pure anxiety. I left Earth not expecting to return, and here I am, falling towards Earth at incredible speed.
