Summary
It had been a long and difficult 27 years since the Hail Mary had launched. Not as terrible as it could have been, but not easy. Humanity had survived and adapted, as it always did. There had been terrible wars. There had been incredible acts of kindness. There had been massive scientific breakthroughs. And now, there were two distant blips of Petrova-light, picked up by the Deep Space Network, hurtling home. Two probes, braking hard as they hurtled toward Earth holding the secrets to its salvation. They were late, or at least, not very early, but they were here.
Grace may have made his peace with dying to save Rocky, but Rocky insists they return to Earth.

I sigh, stretching my back out for what feels like the hundredth time, and click the ‘on’ button on my headset mic.
“Stratt?” I say, turning to look through the window into the observation room. I see her perk up, lifting her head from her tablet and leaning forwards to press the intercom button.
“Got something?” she asks. I feel kind of bad for getting her hopes up, but I have more pressing matters right now. Such as the matter of my waistband pressing uncomfortably into my swollen lower abdomen.
“Yeah, a full bladder,” I reply, trying to add some humour in the hopes that she won’t get too annoyed about me disrupting her work just because I need to take a leak. …It does not work. She looks at me, unblinking, for a long and uncomfortable moment. …It’s kind of intimidating.

Considering everything that had happened recently, Grace was pretty confident that there was little that could genuinely surprise him anymore.
In what had felt like a whirlwind, he’d been hand-selected to be the first human to study alien life, even if at that point it was because he had been seen and expendable. His entire life was uprooted shortly after for becoming a little too important in studying said alien life form. Then, waking up several years later and several light-years away from Earth with two corpses who were supposed to be his crewmates. Then, to top it all off, he’d encountered Rocky, a whole new type of intelligent life form who was here at Tau Ceti with the same goal as him. To save their dying stars.
Yet all that confidence went out to airlock as he stared up at the blinking console, the ship’s monotone alert ringing out. “Radio Transmission in Progress, Accept Transmission? Y/N”

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a mission he doesn't remember volunteering for. Alone on a ship scaled far too large for a borrower, he has to try to figure out why he's so far from home, and what he's supposed to do. On top of that, he needs to figure out why this mission is so prepared to have a borrower on the crew-standing at only six inches tall, it's easy to think none of this was meant for him. And yet, everywhere he looks he finds evidence that whoever built this ship built it with both humans and borrowers in mind.
An impossible task looms over him. A scientific mystery has somehow sent him hurtling through space, impossibly far from any other human or borrower, and it's on him to surpass an extinction-level threat that doesn't care how big someone is. It will end the world all the same if he doesn't do something about it.
But, despite what he thinks, he's not alone.
