For a whole year, Marissa has been preoccupied with the sun. Ever since she learned its luminosity was decreasing on that fateful Thursday, she’s become obsessed with addressing the issue the best she can while working at the Department of Energy sponsored Berkeley Lab in California. So when Eva Stratt offers her the chance to make a difference in the fight against global cooling, it only takes her a moment to agree.
She didn’t mean to drag her old friend Ryland Grace into it though. At least being the sidekicks of the de-facto world dictator is a little more pleasant with someone familiar around.
An AU where Grace’s grad school friend Marissa is brought onto the Petrova Taskforce. More of an exploration of character dynamics and the need to hold onto what makes us human in the face of a crisis than dealing with the butterfly effect. Mostly book canon but I was inspired to add a few things from the movie too. Also featuring an extremely generous helping of artistic liberty since canon Marissa has very little characterization.

There had been terrible wars. There had been incredible acts of kindness. There had been massive scientific breakthroughs. And now, there were two distant blips of Petrova-light, picked up by the Deep Space Network, hurtling home. Two probes, braking hard as they hurtled toward Earth holding the secrets to its salvation. They were late, or at least, not very early, but they were here.
Grace may have made his peace with dying to save Rocky, but Rocky insists they return to Earth.

Then, waking up several years later and several light-years away from Earth with two corpses who were supposed to be his crewmates. Then, to top it all off, he’d encountered Rocky, a whole new type of intelligent life form who was here at Tau Ceti with the same goal as him. To save their dying stars.
