1888 is destined to be the year most indelibly etched upon my memory.
And not because Holmes and I had together solved a fresh assortment of baffling and bizarre cases—though we certainly concluded our fair share of knotty commissions that year.
What has seared it so deeply into the fabric of time is the storm that descended, sudden and merciless, upon Holmes himself, and the parting that it ultimately wrought.
It was early August, and we had just put the finishing touches to the affair of the Naval Treaty. That rather consequential business had concluded in a manner most satisfactory—the document recovered, the culprit securely in custody. We boarded the train for London bearing the pleasant weariness of a job well done. The English countryside reeled past the window in swift retreat; fields and copses shimmered with that soft, mellow light peculiar to late summer.
Holmes sat opposite me, leaning against the window frame and looking, for once, on the verge of nodding off—an uncharacteristically lax attitude. At that moment, I supposed this to be merely another unremarkable homeward journey. Little did I suspect that a tempest of murder and false accusation was about to break over our heads.
