What mattered was Noob lying face-down in the grass, body jerking weakly, blood soaking into the dirt beneath him. If it were to be chopped down, killed late for all of the many, many years it must have been standing, Quin would be able to see its rings. He'd be able to know if it'd been properly nourished or subject to drought. Whether or not it'd been beaten down by wind, rain, or fire. If it'd grown proper and straight or a little crooked. Its age... Quin didn't need to see its rings to guess at that.
It was tall enough to brush the clouds, it looked like from where Quin lay in bed safe behind cloudy window panes. Small cracks like webs littered the glass. Dust and grime had settled stubbornly into the corners.
Everything was old here. For the Land of Death, everything held so much life. So many stories Quin would never truly know.
