Summary
In Mike's letters there would be markings through words, sometimes even whole sentences. He would read his words over and over. Stay up for hours at a time, losing sleep trying to recover what was under it. The scribbled ink taunting him, laughing at him. Like there was a part of Mike he still didn't know, hiding just underneath a cheap blue pen. Did Mike do this on purpose? Did he want him to decipher the scratchy ink or was it lost forever? What if Mike was just lazy and didn't want to start over? What if it meant nothing at all?
It didn't stop Will from doing the same, anytime he felt nervous about something he said- something that may be too far for friends to say, he would mark through it. Hoping that one day Mike would grow curious as well, that he would uncover his feelings.
Then about six months after the move, he started signing them with-
Love, Mike.
The party is now broken. All navigating through the damage left behind by the mindflayer.
Confusing letters to late night phone calls, with two thousand miles between them. Until a road trip after graduation changes everything.

The door to his bedroom suddenly felt miles away. Mike walked along a fence line until there was no path. Then just kept going until he was in the desert. No lights except the party at a distance. The stars were glowing in a way that made everything feel so fucking small. Mike was looking at the ground so he didn’t notice.
He sat on a rock that was the start of a hillside, maybe an entire mountain, it was too dark to tell.
‘What the fuck.’ He thought.
He really had no idea how this would go, but this? Barely even 2 sentences exchanged? Fuck he would have rather Will scream at him in front of everyone. Tell him how fucked up it was that Mike never reached out. After Will came out. After he told Will he was still his best friend. After his sister died.
‘Tell me, tell me Will that you’re mad at me. Tell me that’s why you never called again so I have something concrete to blame it on.’
But the nothingness? Like they just barely knew each other. That was so much worse.
