Then her feet float out of the concrete for the jump, and Joy realizes. She's going to die. The first thing she feels is the thud. The last thing she feels is the burning sensation at the back of her head. And her last rational thought is, "I really wish I had done more".
Her body reaches the pool, her back is the first part of her body to hit the water with a nasty crack that echoes throughout the gym. And Joy Kwon sinks as everyone shouts her name. Her mouth, nostrils, and ears filled with water, and she had always hated chlorine, but now it was chlorine that had dragged her into oblivion. She learned to swim at age 4, she fell off her bike at age 8 and hit her head, she lost granma when she was 19. She is 25 and she will drown. She had a date at 5 PM at a really nice restaurant downtown. She'll never get that date.
