Except, things are different this time. After Vox's attack on heaven and the devastation of hell, everyone left working for the Vees are unsure what to do. And the ones contracted to them are terrified of what will happen to them. It was rare for anyone to work for the Vees for longer than a few years. A handful made it to a decade before they were thrown out or, in recent times, killed outright.
This makes Angel Dust different. To survive the power shift, eyes fall to him for guidence. And Angel isn't able to sucumb to apathy. He has no choice but to help.

For all the difficulties Astarion faced in life, at least he'd never found himself trapped within a drainage pipe before. It seemed like a miserable experience. The murky brown waters emitted a foul smell of rot and fish that turned his stomach, though he still stood on the harbor's banks. The odor must be even worse for a cat with a stronger sense of smell than he possessed.
He watched with detached curiosity as the little creature tried to free itself by maneuvering around the grate, but it kept slipping under the intensity of the water's flow. Swept against metal, its body was pinned flat against the bars. Astarion realized distantly, if he did not help the creature, it would die under the filthy rapids.
Astarion couldn't remember the last time he felt someone genuinely cared about him. It was okay though. He was used to the loneliness. Preferred it even.
But after encountering an exceptionally brilliant cat and its even brighter owner, he begins to wonder if he is truly okay stumbling through life on his own

He had everything he’d ever wanted. But little did he know, standing in his open doorway on that brisk December morning, that the Mike Wheeler of his childhood was gone.
