Summary
Eleven-year-old Emiliano "Milo" Cruz lives in a leaking tent, trapped in his mother's drug addiction. Underdeveloped and scarred by years of neglect, he survives hour by hour. His early trauma includes forced exposure to drugs, alcohol, and violence before entering CPS custody, where bullying and predatory behavior taught him adults couldn't be trusted.
When a medical problem frightens Milo, he visits Dr. Jason Hale's free clinic. Jason notices the boy's fear, malnourishment, and neglect. His gentle examination becomes Milo's first safe adult interaction. Something in the doctor softens; this lonely man with too much house recognizes a child who has failed at every turn.
Dr. Hale offers Milo's mother a housekeeping job with guest house accommodations. When she soon relapses and abandons Milo, Jason steps up without hesitation. Though Dr. Hale has his own motives as a closeted pedophile attracted to boys in white briefs, they form a bond that transforms his estate from a quiet refuge into a found-family sanctuary.
Their story follows a traumatized boy discovering love doesn't have to hurt, and a man learning that family is something you choose, and sometimes, something that chooses you.
